We had a wonderful mokuhanga workshop yesterday at @coppellartscenter ‘s impressive Vari Space. Participants carved and printed these colorful pieces in just 3 hours. Thank you to @paperartsdallas for sponsoring the workshop.

Today we highlight the work of Daryl Howard, Chie Kawabata, and Mayuko Kawasaki in the @l.inking exhibition at the @coppellartscenter.

Mayuko Kawasaki (Japan) writes "I create my work using salmon as a subject matter. I am attracted to vibrant color as well as beautiful contour lines created on its flesh. I enjoy transforming it into something of my own which can be salmon or something else. I want the viewers to feel slight awkwardness when looking at my work."

私は魚の鮭をモチーフに木版画作品を制作しています。鮭がもつ身の鮮やかさや肉厚さ、スジの曲線に魅力を感じさまざまな形に変化させています。鮭が鮭であるような、そうでないような少しの違和感を感じていただきたいです。

Chie Kawabata ( @biwahiko ) Chie Kawabata was born in Kyoto 1974. She received her MFA in Printmaking from Kyoto Seika University in 2000. For more than two decades her work has received awards in many international exhibitions and has been in many solo and group exhibitions in Japan.

私は、日本の水性木版画の特徴でもある、透明感のある色彩に魅力を感じて制作をしています。透明感のある色彩、木の質感、和紙の柔らかな風合いが、私の心の内にある情景を表現するのにとても適しているのです。私の作品を通して、木版画の魅力を感じて頂ければ嬉しいです。

Daryl Howard ( @darylhowardart ) After receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University in 1970, Daryl lived and taught art at an overseas school in Tokyo, Japan from 1971 to 1975. Daryl apprenticed with Master printmaker Hodaka Yoshida before returning to the states for graduate school at University of Texas at Austin. "After over forty years of sketching, carving and printing, I am still as excited as I was when I pulled my first print with Hodaka Yoshida in Tokyo."

Today we share the work of Mara Cozzolino, Fabiola Gil Alares, and Kyoko Hirai in the @l.inking exhibition at the @coppellartscenter.

Mara Cozzolino ( @mara_cozzolino ) lives in Italy. After working with different printmaking techniques, she discovered mokuhanga and shifted her focus. She writes, "I want my prints to be universal, I want my landscapes to be universal, and I want everyone from Italy, where I live, to the U.S. or Australia to be able to enjoy one of my prints and think “I’ve been there.”"

Fabiola Gil Alares ( @fabiola_gil_studio ) hails from Spain. She explains "My starting points are notebooks completed like life diaries. I mix lines and color areas, trying to complete my notebooks' line drawings with colors that remind me of emotions. I’m interested in color theory and the influence of colors in people’s way of behaving..."

Kyoko Hirai ( @kyoko.hirai ) Born in Osaka, Kyoko Hirai studied at Kyoto Seika University and under Keizo Sato, a master of Sato woodblock print studio. She is a Certified Kyoto Traditional Products Craftsmen and serves as director of the Kyoto Branch of the Ukiyo-e Woodcut Engraving Technology Preservation Association.

Kyoko Hirai provided many educational materials for this exhibition, including photos of a print studio in Japan and progressive state proofs showing how an image is built up in layers on paper. Thank you to Kyoko for making mokuhanga more accessible to our audience.

Today we're highlighting 3 artists in the @l.inking exhibition: Christine Adame, Katie Baldwin, and Laura Boswell.

Christine Adame ( @cnadame ) is an intermedia artist from Laredo, Texas. In 2014, Christine studied mokuhanga under Richard Steiner in Kyoto, Japan. She teaches at @twuvisualarts.

Katie Baldwin ( @katieameliabaldwin ) - Born in the Pacific Northwest, Katie has traveled internationally and studied mokuhanga at the Nagasawa Residency and Mi-Lab Residency, both in Japan. Baldwin co-founded @woodpaperbox collaborative, Shift-lab collective, and @mokuhangasisters. She teaches at the University of Alabama Huntsville.

Laura Boswell ( @laura_boswell_printmaker ) - Based in the UK, Laura has attended three residencies in Japan, studying woodblock printmaking with mastercraftsmen. Her book “Making Japanese Woodblock Prints” was published in 2019, and her second book “Linocut and Reduction Printing, Design and Techniques” is expected later this year.

In the coming days, we'll feature more artists and installation shots from the @l.inking exhibition at the @coppellartscenter. For each post, we plan to feature several artists and a sample of the work they contributed to the show.

In the coming weeks, we'll feature artists and installation shots from the @l.inking exhibition at the @coppellartscenter. Today, we're showing the main lobby space that greets visitors.

The L.inking exhibition showcases contemporary woodblock prints by international and American artists with a focus on traditional and reinterpreted applications of Japanese woodblock, mokuhanga. Once used to create popular ukiyo-e (“picture of the floating world”) prints in the 17th and 18th centuries, mokuhanga is experiencing a revitalization and expanding its influence on contemporary artists around the world. The exhibition highlights mokuhanga woodcut as an accessible art medium, generating and sustaining broad interest and awareness. Educational materials such as tools, woodblocks, and step-by-step proofs accompany artwork from artists around the globe.

We are pleased to announce L.Inking, an exhibition of contemporary relief prints at the Coppell Arts Center from May 10 – June 19, 2022. This exhibition showcases contemporary and reinterpreted Japanese woodblock prints by thirty artists from eight countries. Thank you to @coppellartscenter for featuring this exhibition.

Connecting with #mokuhanga artists at the @ima_intl_mokuhanga_assoc conference was a great joy. The conference organizers released Zoom recordings of events for those of us who could not go to Japan in person, and we’re taking time to review events and catch up with ones we missed. Here we are taking questions online and taking a virtual tour of the Sumi-Fusion International Juried Exhibition. Somehow we got through a computer crash during the Q&A 😣and kept going 🥲. Thank you to the @ima_intl_mokuhanga_assoc for your work organizing this international conference across many time zones and languages.
