👋 A mokuhanga collaboration with @kazukogo10 , @julianne.dao , and @lrgibbons

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Here is a detail of a Mokuhanga image I have ben working on. I am drawn to this process, perhaps because I was born in Japan, but the transparency of layers is what I strive to achieve in many of my woodcuts. Here, watercolor is brushed onto the relief blocks instead of traditional brayers with a type of oil base ink. This image, AIR is 4 blocks 15x40”, and there are at least 7 layers applied to the paper. You can see this print at the Coppell Art Center thru June 17th. It is such an honor to be exhibiting with this amazing group of artist from all over the world.

Today we share the work of Mara Cozzolino, Fabiola Gil Alares, and Kyoko Hirai in the @l.inking exhibition at the @coppellartscenter.

Mara Cozzolino ( @mara_cozzolino ) lives in Italy. After working with different printmaking techniques, she discovered mokuhanga and shifted her focus. She writes, "I want my prints to be universal, I want my landscapes to be universal, and I want everyone from Italy, where I live, to the U.S. or Australia to be able to enjoy one of my prints and think “I’ve been there.”"

Fabiola Gil Alares ( @fabiola_gil_studio ) hails from Spain. She explains "My starting points are notebooks completed like life diaries. I mix lines and color areas, trying to complete my notebooks' line drawings with colors that remind me of emotions. I’m interested in color theory and the influence of colors in people’s way of behaving..."

Kyoko Hirai ( @kyoko.hirai ) Born in Osaka, Kyoko Hirai studied at Kyoto Seika University and under Keizo Sato, a master of Sato woodblock print studio. She is a Certified Kyoto Traditional Products Craftsmen and serves as director of the Kyoto Branch of the Ukiyo-e Woodcut Engraving Technology Preservation Association.

Kyoko Hirai provided many educational materials for this exhibition, including photos of a print studio in Japan and progressive state proofs showing how an image is built up in layers on paper. Thank you to Kyoko for making mokuhanga more accessible to our audience.

L.inking is up through June 18, 2022 at Coppell Arts Center, 505 Travis Street, Coppell, Texas 75019
