I had such a gorgeous day in community with @wearequeerlydisabled celebrating Disability Pride! The joy and acceptance I've felt from my community lately has boosted my self/body confidence immensely. I loved celebrating our disabled bodies that have been through a lot but are keeping us alive.

Body confidence has never been easy for me, as I've battled chronic heath issues since childhood that have kept me overweight. Society always made me feel less than due to my size/deafness/disabilities, and I listened to it for way too long.

My life was nearly cut short from fatphobia in the healthcare system when I was going through kidney failure last year. I'm so grateful for the doctors that fought for me and so proud of myself for not giving up until I got my transplant.

It also took me so long to accept my Deafness and embrace it. I'm so happy to finally feel welcomed into the Deaf community. Swimming in the ocean with other Deaf/signing folks was such a special experience, and the first time I didn't feel left out in a swimming environment. I also loved getting to showcase + celebrate my hearing aids in this photoshoot, as I hid them for so long. 🤟

Words truly can't do justice to what moving to LA, embracing my queerness and disabilities, sharing my stories on stage, and finding real community has done for my confidence and self-acceptance.

Lacey (she/they) is a proudly Deaf and Disabled comedic storyteller! She’s performed in the Bergamot Comedy Festival, Laugh Riot Grrrl Comedy Fest, and all over LA. She hosts the Group Chat Storytelling mic every third Sunday at The Crow in Santa Monica. She always had dogs growing up, but sadly has not yet one as an adult. She also just so happens to have survived kidney failure, a bout of dialysis, and a kidney transplant, all at the ripe old age of 31. 2025: the year I got a second chance at life, lost my person, and felt the most immense love from my community. Loss + hope were so intertwined my head spun.

I started the year hopeful with beautiful time in nature and performing, and then LA was hit by the devastating fires the same week we lost my niece. @ritual_roots helped me get through that awful week by taking me in 💚

My health started declining rapidly and I let my community in. They showed up for me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. @kierstencomedian @jennableecker and @nicblaine put together the most beautiful fundraiser show for me at my comedy home, @crowcomedy. The night was filled with people from all parts of my life in LA and I felt so supported ✨️

I crashed into dialysis but very luckily found a kidney match one month later, getting my life saving transplant on 6/19 🫘

My wonderful caregivers @bdmine @sherry_bright2 @taylorm_lives @leila.malika and @jehrahrdoh helped me through scary times following the surgery, and I developed even deeper bonds with them and got to make many new cherished memories. They were here when things got really rough with Peggy and I am so beyond thankful I wasn't alone during that 💙

I reignited my love of dancing and became deeply immersed in beautiful disabled community largely thanks to @sophium introducing me to @infiniteflowdance💃🏻

I found clowning which helped me confront my emotions and grief in ways I desperately needed, while also making me belly laugh and rediscover the silliness my parents always embodied and which was deep inside me 🤡

I found so much joy and new friends in comedy/storytelling classes, gatherings, and shows 🎤

I spent wonderful time with my sister, newborn nephew and family 🐶

I lost my favorite person on this planet on 9/10. I'm still struggling to comprehend it. I'm doing my best to move forward in life with focusing on my joy and bringing love everywhere I go, which is what Peggy always did. These last few weeks have really driven home how much I have become Peggy in all the positive ways. I know she lives on in me 🥹
