MAKE YOUR OWN FOOTBALL with artist Malena Guerrieri just in time for the World Cup 2026 🏟️⚽️🤍

As part of Objects at Play, join artist Malena Guerrieri for a one-time hands-on workshop to create your own football using 100% recycled Argentine leather.

🗓️ Saturday, June 6th | 3–7 PM
📍 67 West St., Studio 513

Choose your colors, textures, and combinations, and create a one-of-a-kind piece—whether to play with, keep, or gift. A celebration of football, material memory, and the return to the handmade.

“I’m interested in working with leather not only as the original material of football, but also as a surface where color, handwork, and identity intersect. Each ball reactivates something from a tradition that is slowly disappearing.” @malenaguerrieri

NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! All materials included + drinks and bites.

ARTIST BIO
Malena Guerrieri (b. 1988, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a visual artist based in Argentina. She holds an MA from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where she participated in the research project Forms of Life in collaboration with MUDAM Luxembourg.

In 2023, she curated The Antwerp Chair Collection, transforming discarded chairs into a collective exhibition and publication. That same year, she participated in the On Boards Biennale and TO BE ANTWERP.

Her recent solo exhibition, La Caprichosa in Buenos Aires, featured footballs made from discarded leather scraps. Her practice explores the creative potential of everyday objects and found materials, giving them renewed presence and second life.

“What began as one woman’s private act of collecting has evolved into a shared cultural project involving family members, artists, researchers, and visitors.” - Trisha Balster for @szmagazin on Wool Skirts.

One year ago, we were preparing the first public presentation of Wool Skirts and asking ourselves: What to do with a collection of 632 wool skirts?

A year later, the collection has reached far beyond New York, connecting with people across generations, backgrounds, and geographies. What began as an exhibition has become a collective and evolving project, and that original question is still alive with all of you.

The first Wool Skirts publication is now in progress and new collaborations and chapters are coming this winter.

The story continues.

“I’m interested in working with leather not only as football’s original material, but as a surface where color, handwork, and identity converge.”— Malena Guerrieri

Drawing from archived leather remnants sourced from her family’s factory in Argentina, artist Malena Guerrieri (@malenaguerrieri) is keeping a disappearing Argentine craft alive. Working with unused materials in a wide range of colors and textures, she transforms industrial leftovers into one-of-a-kind pieces that exist beautifully between functional objects and sculpture.

Every single ball is a unique piece of history, rich with family archive, material experimentation, and the warmth of the human touch.

You can view these pieces and many more at La Sudestada’s (@la.sudestada) “Objects at Play” exhibition through July 26th!

ARMANDO by @agoshida

This short film, captured by Argentinian designer Agostina Hidalgo last year in Naples, beautifully summarizes much of what we experienced and explored over the past two months through Objects at Play—an exhibition where artists and designers reimagined the symbols, rituals, and objects that shape football culture.

Beyond the game. Beyond the fandom.

Football is one of the most powerful forms of belonging. It creates connections that transcend language, geography, age, and background. It lives in family traditions, neighborhood rituals, chance encounters, and shared celebrations. It gives strangers something in common, turns public spaces into gathering places, and transforms a simple object into a vessel for memory, identity, and collective imagination.

Throughout Objects at Play, we were interested not only in football itself, but in everything that surrounds it: the stories we inherit, the communities we build, and the emotional landscapes that emerge through participation, devotion, and play.

“The capsule is a tribute to her grandparents, her first team, and to the Sundays and shared memories through which that passion became part of her emotional landscape.” — Agostina Hidalgo

Today we will be closed for the World Cup Final.

Join us next weekend for the final days of Objects at Play.

SCENES FROM AN AFTERNOON OF PLAY ⚽️🤍💙

A couple of weeks ago, designer Agostina Hidalgo joined us from Buenos Aires to share the world of ARMANDO—her capsule exploring football, identity, and self-expression, currently on view as part of Objects at Play and available at the gallery and online—and to guide participants through reworking their own kits.

Together, we customized jerseys, T-shirts, shorts, and caps, transforming them into personal expressions through football, craft, and collective imagination.

Thank you, Agostina, for your generosity and creative spirit, and thank you to everyone who came ready to experiment, play, and make something entirely their own.
