The lovely Serena @serena_branwyn brought my Frida Kahlo inspired creation to life! The faces are embroidered in monochromatic colors, tiered pants are a departure from a traditional skirt, handmade wool tlacoyales curated from Oaxaca hanging loosely in hair. A nod to the harness Frida wore under her iconic clothing. From my heart to my hands/sewing machine to the runway! taken in Eagle, Idaho by @la_cheekie

This pattern by @yoursara_k The Sewing Therapist was so easy and fun to make!
The solid maroon fabric is manta that I found in my travels to Oaxaca this winter. I had never seen such an assortment of colors of this cotton fabric.
The contrast fabric on the yolk and sleeves is cambaya also made and used in Latin America. It’s known for its bright festive lines and used on traditional silhouettes. by @la_cheekie

Almost a year ago, a conversation between Ritual Blue @ritualblue and me @sewarteandupcycle planted a seed. 🌱

We started talking about something we both believed Boise needed — a space to celebrate Slow Fashion. A space for sustainable fashion designers, vintage lovers, thrifters, menders, makers, refashioners, and upcyclers. A space where creativity, sustainability, and community could come together.

We took a leap and applied to be part of Treefort with the idea of launching Boise Slow Fashion. At the time, it didn’t work out. Like many good ideas, it had to sit for a while.

Then a few weeks ago something unexpected happened — Alefort reached out and invited us to create a fashion component for this year’s festival. Suddenly the idea we had been dreaming about had a place to grow.

Since then, so many incredible people have stepped in to help make this happen. Designers, models, collaborators, organizers, and friends who believe in the power of slow fashion and creative resistance. I’m deeply grateful to every single person who said "yes" and helped bring this vision to life.

As Sew Arte, my work has always been about giving garments a second life — transforming what already exists into something new, expressive, and meaningful. Being able to share that philosophy alongside such a talented community at Treefort / Alefort feels truly special.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far. This is just the beginning.

✨ Excited to see you at Alefort.
✨ Excited to celebrate Boise Slow Fashion.
✨ And excited to see what everyone is wearing.

Completed project from my Huipil class with Zaira @ceiba.atelier. I cut to size and sewed it together. The embroidery was already on the fabric. This style of chain stitching embroidery is from el Istmo (eastern) region of Oaxaca. Embroidery from el Istmo was very often worn by Frida Kahlo who made wearing a Huipil a fashion statement! Yellow beaded earrings are from the Isla Mujeres Women’s Beading Co-op. by @la_cheekie

El Huipil(pronounced “wee peel”). I learned so much about this traditional piece that can be sewn and cut as a top or a dress. Zaira is a fashion designer that offers a very educational and hands on learning experience in her home town of Oaxaca City. She demonstrated various types of textiles, how they are made and where they are from. I left the sewing class with my very own Huipil! I’m so grateful for the time and care she took to share about Oaxaca’s rich handmade textiles. by @la_cheekie
