Tonight at Venice - Iman & Simon backing up @bongo_bazinski & @trumankennedymusic as Exemplary Cavalier! 9-12

On to drum nerdom:
Really fun cymbal setup in the studio today. @paistecymbals Twenty Series across the board: 22" Ride, 22" Light Ride, 20" Crash, 16" Twenty Masters Prototype Hats. Precursor to the Masters Series that everyone loves today. Beautifly trashy with just enough umph to catch your attention. Tracked thru an @antelope_audio Orion Synergy Core with a @sennheiser 602 on the kick, @seelectronics 4400's & a @warmaudio WA 87 on top.
Thanks to @labackbeat for the fresh timber too!

MjM this Friday 3/27 at Sola Violins 7PM.
Long before I even considered making drumsticks…
A little over 3 decades ago I was playing with Denny Skerrett in his father’s world beat band Ya-Ya, and also with Dion Pierre in a power trio by several names... Fusebox, Tonic (every name we picked we found a month or so later was already another somewhat notable band.) After I graduated college in ‘95, Fusebox fizzled out and Dion and I started questioning direction. We decided to pursue the jazz idiom, afterall Jazz is dead, and he asked me if I knew any saxaphonists. I sure did. Enter Denny Skerrett and we formed MjM sometime Christmas of ‘95, January ‘96. I suppose I was the thread but I’ve never taken sole credit for this joint endeavor. It was a transformative direction for all of us. We became our own support network. Dion learning upright bass, myself switching from left handed kit setup to right handed open playing, and the three of us immersing ourselves in the world of Jazz when there was no real scene in Acadiana. We were creating it. Within a few years we added Shin Ishida on keys and Jeff Martin on trumpet. The quintet played quite a few weddings, private events, Lion’s Tavern, a residency at Bisbano’s and Blue Dog, and we cut our teeth at Cornwell’s, and Cafe 101. We were so hungry to play, we got paid lunch at Cafe 101 and free coffee.

Out of the ashes of one project rose a phoenix of sorts. We created not only new music but some lasting friendships. We are now back to our trio form of origin.

This is one of the music projects I still perform with (outside of making La BackBeat drumsticks)... mainly because of the collaboration and friendship.

We’ll be playing a collection of those old MjM original tunes this friday at Sola Violins. It’ll be wonderful to see, visit and share this again with all of you.

When life gives you lemons…🍋🍋🍋🍋
.
…give a bunch away, then make some lemonade…. Or juice anyway.
.
This little Meyer lemon tree has provided so much Yuletime bounty. Years ago a neighbor dug it up, had it on a pile of debris and it was headed to the street. It was a twig in the ground for years and I was told it was a lime. After sitting through a winter in a bucket of water that froze that winter, I planted it that spring. It exploded in growth in this full sun spot at the shop and within 2 years it was filling 8 of crates seasonally. I think it was the 2022 hard freeze that killed the original trunk even though I tented and left a light on for warmth. Lafayette lost so much citrus that year. I pruned the tree back to the trunk and said a few words. Shortly thereafter it sent up some shoots to the sun. What you see is all new growth from the graft and the original trunk has rotted off. While it produced 3-1/2 baskets of juicy lemons this year last week… not nearly what once did… it’s more than nothing. It’s a survivor for sure. If you got some, I hope they bring you some good health and vitamin C. I’m finding new ways to enjoy lemon. Natures bounty 🍋 Merry Yuletime!!

The Bluerunners played this weekend at the Festival International in Lafayette. This was the first time we have played together in years and it was a wonderful time. Each show seemed better than the last. It was wonderful to see friends and family and we really had a great time. taken in Lafayette, Louisiana by @labackbeat

A day in the life of the Maytag repairman!
It’s not everyday there’s a problem to solve, but when there is…ya gotta put on that hat 🧢 there is no calling someone to fix it because the company is DEFUNCT! The issue here is part of end pressure reduction… a crucial part of long slender turnings… like drumsticks 🍗 it’s also tied into a safety that prevents continued boring in of the drive spur. A few weeks ago I discovered yet another fail in assembly of this machine at the factory 40 years ago in this particular valve. I got everything working as it should and then, all of a sudden, it stopped working properly. I have a feeling this particular issue is from this lathe sitting more than it ran. I’ll see how it goes eventually since it’s not something that can really be tested. 🤞
.
This is yet another reason I chose to run “analog” lathes and not “digital” cnc lathes. I can only imagine adding “code” into the equation.
