I was sadly made aware that an eighth grader
took their own life this week.
I attended the same school so many years before. And at the same age, one night, I stood on a roof overlooking Sunset Blvd, arriving at the same solution.
I got lucky.
I stepped back.
The judgements, the posts, the criticisms, the expectations we hammer on children - it’s beyond bullying. It’s violence. It’s torture.
We put so much weight on children’s shoulders. This world is heavy enough.
I’ve heard parents say we need to toughen them up or prepare them for the real world.
What you don’t get is they live in the real world every day, and they are already being taught, unfortunately or compelled to learn unfortunately, how brutal and hateful and judgmental the world can be. Can’t we just give them a time out from it?
I was and am a sensitive person, it is why I can write the way I do. It is why I can speak vulnerably and open my heart, let other people in and give love away myself.
We need to stop making things same, with the same expectations and recognizing differences in children, and for fucks sake, let them be children as long as they can. That doesn’t mean spoiling them, it just means showing them as much love as you can every day. Maybe don’t put one more extra curricular activity in for them to do just so they get into the right college. Maybe just spend some extra time with them baking cookies or playing a game or anything exploratory or adventurous., drive that 30 minutes to the beach and just watch the sunset and talk about stupid things. Create for them a place of peace because the world is gonna keep being the torturous place it is right now.
Give them a safe place to be and dream.
Protect them from the other parents out there, who teach their kids to be those bullies, those haters, those heartless minions who post for people to unalive themselves.
Protect them from them.
