Posting twice in one day?! What is she doing?!

Anyway, here's a fun thing I wanted to start. If I'm the only one who does it... well, I guess its just me then! Otherwise, here's the start of (Book)rectober! Each day in October, I'll post a rec based on the prompts on the last slide. I hope you'll join along, or if you think this is an awful idea, idk man, just let me know. K love you.

I'm SUPER not interested in a specific book in a series by a specific author. No judgment if you are, but there are SO many other authors with books coming out, and I'd rather show them (you) some love.

So tell me what you've got!!

Just in case you wanted some non-political dystopian books to read.

(Book)rectober day 17! Boy are we really moving along! Ahhh, to slowly descend into madness. Or, to descend below the ground. Which is it? A secret third option even?

I decided to go with Devouring Fortune. This is a new release, and BOY does it pack a punch. A complicated story of desire, fate, and what it means to break the world. If you like intricately woven tales and bargains with a devil, check this one out.

🩸👻 Days 13 & 14: PRICK + HAUNT (Book)rectober

Catching up with two prompts that take horror in very different directions: the dangers hiding in medical care and the decisions that haunt us.

💉 PRICK - READ: Harvest by Tess Gerritsen. A surgical resident uncovers a disturbing organ transplant conspiracy. When medicine, surgery, and human lives collide, the real horror may be happening in the operating room. It's been so long since I've read this one but I love medical horror!

📚 PRICK - TBR: Obstetrix by Naomi Kritzer. An obstetrician is kidnapped by a fundamentalist cult that needs her medical skills. A needle on the cover caught my eye, but the nurse in me has me even more curious about the book!

👻 HAUNT - READ: The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. Four Blackfeet men are haunted by the consequences of a traumatic event from their past. Its been a few years since I read this one so I'll be rereading it before I start book 2!

📚 HAUNT - TBR: Off the Reservation by Stephen Graham Jones. The follow up to The Only Good Indians brings back Nate Yellow Tail on a journey to repatriate the bones of a Blackfeet boy who died at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. But something terrible comes along with the remains. I actually got to see Stephen Graham Jones this week for the book's release, which makes this one an especially exciting addition to my TBR! How was I not going to include these books!!

Do you enjoy medical horror? Any great recs? What is your fav SGJ book?

day 16: braid 🪢 🌿 🖤

i interpreted “braid” as the intertwining of personal experience and collective history, the ways our lives are shaped by forces that precede us and continue to reach into the present.

i chose sorrowland by Rivers Solomon because i’m curious about how speculative horror might explore the body as an archive of history, where the personal and political become difficult to disentangle. this one’s on my TBR priority list, and i’m intrigued by the possibility of exploring this connection through the novel. 🙂‍↕️🙌🏾 by @lacee_reads

ITS FRIYAY! And also (book)rectober day 16 and today's prompt is braid. Yet again, no clue what I was thinking with this one, but maybe my goal was only to challenge.

I opted for a non horror/thriller/spooky book, but an important book nonetheless. This discusses grief, and fillial obligation, and what it means to want to live your own life when culture dictated otherwise.

day 15: staircase 🪜 ⬆️ 🏛️

for “staircase,” i interpreted the prompt as climbing a set of stairs, using the ascent as a metaphor for the pursuit of advancement and the belief that reaching the top is proof of having earned your place.

i chose blood over bright haven because it complicates that familiar narrative. sciona’s ambition made me think about how easily we mistake PROXIMITY TO POWER for evidence that a system is fair. sometimes, the higher we ascend, the harder it becomes to ignore WHAT HOLDS THE STRUCTURE UP. by @lacee_reads

Its Day 15 ya'll, we're halfway through (book)rectober!! And I went with staircase for the halfway point for some inexplicable reason.

Is House of Leaves TOO on point for this? I'm not sure. All I know is that staircase situation will haunt me forever. If you know nothing about House of Leaves, its best you leave it that way before reading. Is it a little too ambitious perhaps? I don't know for sure. To my mind there are at least 4 layers to the story, and that can be overwhelming. If you read it, and wanna talk about it, send me a message.

day 14: haunt 🕯️🪦🌿

for “haunt,” i wanted to explore a different kind of haunting: the histories that continue to shape the present when those who benefited from them refuse to confront their consequences. 🕯️

when the reckoning comes by latanya mcqueen felt like a fitting choice because it confronts the legacy of slavery and the ways its horrors can be obscured beneath a polished façade. the plantation becomes a reminder that the past doesn’t lose its power simply because its history has been sanitized or pushed aside. 💚

Happy day 14 of (book)rectober!! What goes into a haunting? Is it the place itself, is it the people? Is it about lives lost or trauma, and why are places haunted?

I chose The Reformatory because I feel it embodies haunting in a way that is deeply rooted to the culture of the South, and its important to understand where resentment, a lack of trust, and the fear over the system comes from. Its important to see these things and understand them, and not just look away. The Reformatory doesn't let us look away, but forces us to confront the haunting head on.

day 13: prick 🥂🔪🩸

for this prompt, i decided to interpret “prick” as a certain kind of person. you know the type: the ones who mistake wealth for immunity and treat other people as disposable because they’ve never had to face the consequences of their own behavior 🥂

guillotine felt like a fitting choice, given its tale of exploited servants turning against the wealthy family they serve. turns out, being rich doesn’t come with a lifetime exemption from consequences. imagine that 😌

these “pricks” had it coming 🩸
