🩸 boOkreCTOBER - 31 Days of Dread 🩸

day 25: mimic 🎭🪞🫥

for day 25, i interpreted mimic as the pressure to make ourselves legible and acceptable to others. i chose “bury your gays” by chuck tingle because its critique of queer representation explores what happens when those with cultural power expect marginalized people’s stories to conform to their own standards of acceptability.

day 24: moon 🌙🌊💙

for “moon,” i went straight for a book with the word in its title, and the first one that came to mind was when the tides held the moon by venessa vida kelley. i know, i know. not exactly a horror pick for 31 days of dread. 😂 but FANTASY was the genre that first made me fall in love with reading. 🫶🏾

this book is BEAUTIFUL. the writing, thecharacters, the world Kelley brings to life. it has that particular kind of magic that makes me want to stay in a story a little longer. if the premise speaks to you and you haven’t picked this one up yet, consider this your sign. 🙂‍↕️🙌🏾

day 23: dead 💀🗝️🗃️

for “dead,” i wanted to explore the idea that objects can become archives of the dead, preserving traces of lives and histories long after their owners are gone.

the midnight timetable by bora chung felt like a fitting choice for this interpretation, turning ordinary objects into vessels for the stories that refuse to disappear.

day 22: read 📖🔎🕯️

for “read,” i went with reading between the lines, because sometimes a book’s historical context is just as revealing as its plot. 📖 in the yellow wallpaper, charlotte perkins gilman draws on the medical and social attitudes of her era to expose how ideas about women’s proper place shaped the care they received. i love how this kind of reading turns a short story into a document of its time, one worth questioning as much as interpreting.

🎃 boOkreCTOBER - 31 Days of Dread 🎃

day 21: palms 🌴🌺🩸

for “palms,” i suspect the prompt was getting at the palms of our hands. i took a different route and went straight to palm trees, because my mind went to Hawaiʻi. 😆

that brought me to that which feeds us by Keala Kendall. i wanted to feature a Kānaka Maoli author, and as a Kānaka Maoli reader, i’m drawn to stories that engage with Hawaiʻi beyond the familiar images circulated for visitors. Keala’s work gave me an opportunity to approach this prompt through a lens that feels personal to me, reflecting on the difference between the Hawaiʻi i know as my kulāiwi (homeland) and the version so often packaged for visitors.

i want Hawaiʻi to be seen beyond the postcard, with her history and her people given the space we deserve. ✊🏾

day 20: scratch 💅🏾🩸👹

for this prompt, i imagined fingernails scraping at the surface, peeling back layers to expose what was never meant to be found.

enter piñata by leopoldo gout, where the line between uncovering the past and unleashing it becomes dangerously thin. sometimes, the most terrifying things aren’t hiding in the dark…but waiting just beneath the surface. 🫣

🎃 boOkreCTOBER - 31 Days of Dread 👻

day 19: drink 🚢🌊💧

for “drink,” my brain went straight to water, which naturally led me to the ocean. so today’s interpretation is an ocean horror rec: into the drowning deep by mira grant. i read it back in 2024 and remember how much i enjoyed it. it was the book that sent me looking for more horror stories set in the deep blue.

growing up in Hawaiʻi, i learned to approach the ocean with respect and a healthy fear, the kind rooted in reverence for something far more powerful than yourself. the ocean is beautiful, unknowable, and capable of drinking you up and swallowing you whole if you’re not careful. and if there’s one thing you learn growing up around it, it’s this: never turn your back on the ocean. ever. 🌊

day 18: potion 🌿⚗️🧪

for “potion,” i decided to go the literal route (for once 😆) and wanted a book where the prompt felt woven into the story itself, and this poison heart was an easy choice.

i’m always drawn to botanical magic with a dangerous edge, and the old apothecary setting made this book the perfect pick.

decided to bring days 1–15 of boOkreCTOBER together in one post so everything is easy to browse without having to track down each individual post.

this challenge has been such a joy to participate in! revisiting my reading history and wandering through my TBR has been a fun exercise in memory and interpretation, and i’ve loved seeing how many different directions i could take each prompt. some of these books i haven’t thought about since my college days, and a few have even earned themselves a spot on my reread list. 😊

and thank you so much for the kind comments and continued engagement! it’s been lovely seeing you enjoy these recommendations, and i appreciate every bit of support. 💚
