In this episode, playwright Miranda Rose Hall joins Robert Duffley and Geoff Kanick of LubDub Theatre Co to discuss To Tell a Story About the Earth—a playful, inventive piece that’s part traditional play and part MadLib-style guide to creating original theatre about the natural world. Blending artistry, collaboration, and climate awareness, the conversation dives into how this ensemble-driven work invites communities to devise their own stories in celebration of Earth Day and beyond.

Two years ago I worked on a site-specific opera of Das Rheingold at a Top Golf (we lovingly referred to it as Das Rhein-Golf ⛳️ ). The opera was conducted by the wonderful @adamturner7 and directed by the incredible @marybdirects . I was her associate director.

This was still early days of returning to in-person and live rehearsal rooms. One of the first days at Virginia Opera, I remember being in the rehearsal room seated at the table with my notes open next to my libretto and just 15-20ft away a cast of brilliant opera singers were singing full voice. My body is still vibrating. And I was back to live performance.

The performance took place on the fairway of the Top Golf, while the audience was seated in the 3 tiers of bays. The stage was a sea of astroturf. Without wings or trap doors we used the magic of theatre and body and costume. Magical costumes by @sjtosetti . Spools of fabric became a river, golden golfballs were precious metals, giant umbrellas flapped as the wings of a dragon, and golf carts shuttled gods between worlds.

I remember listening to the live orchestra, watching the performers make 400ft entrances, to then deliver a song that had the audience hanging on every note. It feels like one of those shows that could have only happened in that moment. I am so happy to have been a part of it.

In April, Cait and I traveled back to London.

London is where we first met in grad school at E15 a little over a decade ago. After graduating we moved to NYC and a few years later we formed @lubdubtheatreco with co-founding playwright Miranda Rose Hall and co-founding dramaturg @robertduffley .

One of the first plays LubDub commissioned and developed is ‘A Play For The Living In A Time of Extinction’ written by Miranda Rose Hall.

Many readings, workshops, and residencies later, the play was chosen to be part of the STAGES sustainable touring model—no people or stuff are transported, only the play and the recipe-for-production journey from theatre to theatre.

The plays ‘non-tour’ has spanned across Europe and Asia. After watching many live-streams of the play, performed in many languages, we had the opportunity to see it in-person in London at a favorite theatre @barbicancentre . I’m very proud of this play, the LubDub team, and all the production crews/actors/directors that have given life to it. I’m excited about its continued tour in the UK and its life beyond.

One other little bonus of this trip was being invited to return to @east15actingschool and talk with the grad students in the international acting program (this is the program @caitlinnasemacassidy and I were part of) and the international directing program. It all feels full circle, lots of gratitude 💫 taken in Barbican Centre by @ladderonface

Last week, @vinnydeponto and I had the pleasure of bringing together 25 magicians and a very magical host for @undergroundmagicofficial . Our job on this project was to curate all of the acts and to make all of the magic shine throughout the process.

This could not have happened without an incredible team! Huge gratitude for Jack, Jay S, Angela, and Hanne. Huge shout out to Jay C, Kyra, the crew, and the incredible @chelshanders .

We filmed all 24 acts across four live shows in two days. It was a flurry of applause, gasps, laughter, and joy. What was also very magical was what happened off the stage - a community of magicians sharing space. Seeing magicians catching up, talking, meeting (for some, in-person for the first time), watching others’ performances, applauding and lifting each other up was Vinny and my biggest hope from the start.

At the outset @vinnydeponto and I aimed for the @theconjurorsclub to be the most welcoming secret society. In the first weeks of the run we included an ASL performance and an Audio Description performance. It was an invaluable experience meeting, listening, and learning how to translate magic for these performances. A big thank you to the magicians and all the staff at @americanrep for helping us welcome these communities to the club. Thank you Cori, Wendy, Jody, and John.

And the show is still running! It has been a fun way for friends and families in different cities to come together and share some magic. Link for tickets is in the bio. Rush Tickets are available. Send me a message if cost is prohibitive.
