Opening soon. I’m sure it will be a lot more interesting when the water is running! Our new splash pad at 5th street is a sunken paddle wheeler. Many of these boats struggled with the rapids in the Columbia before the train tracks arrived. Rick Island took out several boats I think. At Pateros they still have the boulder with a metal loop down by the river. It was used to hold a rope so they could pull the boats upstream. by @lahrdesign

1. How I clean up the yard (non-native plants, Oenothera macrocarpa, or Missouri primrose, which has huge pods that roll in the wind. (You can see them on the pink grabber things.) 2. How my husband does! 🧤🥾Normally this is where I’d mention save the leaves 🍃 🍂 and leaving brush piles for insects to hibernate in 🔥🚒 but the reality out west is fire is a very real part of our ecosystem! Having one burn within half a mile of our place means we are thinning and removing brush, opening up the landscape with more space around our house, and working towards islands of landscape separated by defensible space. by @lahrdesign

Fire is always a possibility and we had a close call yesterday, though it didn’t get as close as it looks in the first photo. One helicopter worked for hours and hours, filling up in a neighborhood pool or pond and heading up to protect our uphill neighbors, probably from about 2pm until it was too dark for them to continue…which is when we went to see the part out of our view after dusk. Houses down canyon had fire crews on the ground. We got checked out by 3 guys from a DNR crew that dubbed our place defensible. ⭐️ Our wish was fulfilled by two dumps on the line approaching our house late in the day. Phew! 😅 Learned some lessons—planning ahead a plus. I still have not spotted where I stashed the snapshots of the kids when they were little. Had just started on a plan to get those scanned onto a hard drive and/or the cloud before our trip. That would have been the worst loss for me. Got the rest into our car and truck but we didn’t need to leave our house. 🙏🏽 by @lahrdesign

Passed a wheat and sage fire Tuesday along I-90. It was very windy. It looked like the wheat has been cut—a good thing for the farmers and the firefighters. by @lahrdesign

Teeniest baby Western Fence Lizard that I’ve ever caught. Needed to get it away from the garage, where it seemed to be heading. It’s basking in the sun on thyme where smaller bugs also like to be. by @lahrdesign

This rattler was serious. We drove around it and hoped it crossed the road without further incident. The extra special zebra tail stripes are very cool too. by @lahrdesign
