pt. 2, And Phila was born . .

I was inspired in 8th grade to make this as there was [still to my awareness] no graphic novels on native bees and little resources targeting youth, such as older elementary to early middle schoolers. Most of this graphic novella was created in 2021 and 2022.

-
My hope is that this could someday be published to make information on native bees more accessible to a wider audience. If you have suggestions of an organization/university/other that would have interest in something like this, please let me know below.
-
Also, if you are an artist or writer, it would be incredible to see more material to engage youth on native bees, outside of picture books.

I recently finished this book by Dave Goulson. I highly recommend the book as it gives an in-depth look at what earth would look like if insect populations continue to collapse at the current rate, but ends on a hopeful note in dedicating the last section to what we and our governments can do.

"We have to learn to live in harmony with nature, seeing ourselves as a part of it, not trying to rule and control it with an iron fist. Our survival depends upon it, as does that of the glorious pageant of life with which we share our planet."-- Dave Goulson

We went to the Parque Natural Metropolitano on Monday as it is a large natural space in the city with trails. We saw a lot of interesting animals and plants there.
Including blue-headed parrots and three-toed sloths, which I was unable to get photos of. I was able to get photos of the trap jaw ants, but the army ants were to fast for my phone camera.

There were many black stingless bees (I don't know what species) on this banana flower. I am not sure if they were collecting pollen, nectar, or both.

It is incredible the diversity of animals, particularly insects, here. Leaf cutters are one of the common groups (I don't know what species this one is). They move fast enough that my phone camera is unable to take clear pictures of them.

There were a large number of black vultures on and circling above the fish market.

Last day of our superb Bee ID Course with Lincoln Best!
1: A beautiful cuckoo bee specimen caps my last day of our course. This Coelioxys was collected and pinned by the intrepid, dedicated Lisa Robinson (Photo 2). The specimen was so carefully positioned before pinning — the wings spread — with the exquisite venation so clearly visible — that it entranced me totally. One of its antennae was missing, sadly, so I added its name in the place and stead of the antenna, and rendered the image with filters to highlight the venation.
A few of our classmates:
3: Lepidopterist extraordinaire, Dennis St John.
4: Tireless Master’s student, Andrew Simon fluffing endless bumblebees!
5: Master BeeKeeper Brian Campbell, one of Andrew’s chief fluffing-assistants.
6: Super women - beautiful and dedicated Marika and Mae.
7: Talented artist Sam absorbed in a bee textbook - Brian 2, Lisa and fearless BeeMan Linc behind her.
8: Linc in the field: Thank you Lincoln for an extraordinary week of beeing and botanizing. Unforgettable!

The 2019 Morris Mack Open was a GRAND SUCCESS! Friends have been coming together through martial arts for more than 40 years at this event, with no sign of stopping. We saw fierce competition from school owners and new blood alike! If you have never been to a karate tournament, this is a great place to start. Check back soon, we will be posting more photos of the event ASAP. We’ll see you in 2020! #karate #tournament #yakima #yakimavalley #washington #washingtonstate #pnw #centralwashington #martialarts #kungfu #taekwondo #kenpo #taichi #wingchun #bjj #mma #karatekid #karatelife #karatelifestyle #karategirl #karate_do #karateka #karatedo #karatelove #tsukiforkarate2024 #friendship #friends #community #fun
