@lowtheband COVER SERIES - JOHN PRINE performed by NEW band @buried_or_burned only on @bandcamp Friday

The latest track in the Aqualamb series of covers of the band Low:

A devastating interpretation of the song John Prine from the 2002 record, Trust presented by Providence, Rhode Island's, Buried or Burned

Brian Ulrich says:
"Dan and Mike picked that one. We all listened to the original track for a while, and it seemed like it was all about feeling like a failure. Trying to be an artist and a parent and getting disappointment from all sides. Such a bleak and beautiful song. "

"I was always taken by how dynamic Low was live, like listening to amplified electrical wires, all buzzing but played softly. So, we tried to approach the song like that, with everything very amplified but played gently, very HiFi: the scrapes on the bass strings, or plucking the snare rattles. We also thought that if we could completely reinterpret the song as something darker, epic, and cinematic, maybe Alan would be our audience. We threw in all our tricks, noises, and samples from little kids, etc., and then Laine came in with a haunting, soaring vocal. "

Brian Ulrich (Guitar, Vocals)
Dan Goff (Drums, Sounds)
Laine Rettmer (Vocals)
Mike Lemek (Bass, Vocals)

Recorded, engineered by Buried or Burned and Jeff Ottenbacher @jeffotogo in Livingston Manor, NY, Mixed by Buried or Burned, 2026 Mastered by @carlsaff

From now until September 27th, we’re hosting another residency and exhibition project: West of the Sun, which presents the work of Laine Rettmer.

West of the Sun is an exhibition developed from Sinclair, an ongoing moving image and installation project examining Sinclair, Wyoming, a company town built around one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating oil refineries, and the ways industry shapes memory, movement, and daily life. Shot on 16mm film, the project draws on interviews, archival materials, landscape footage, and staged actions with local participants. Rather than following a traditional documentary structure, it uses choreography, repetition, and cinematic staging to explore how identity is performed within a shared industrial environment.

The residency will experiment with various presentations of Rettmer’s multi-channel video installation Sinclair as well as support the development of single-channel works and a libretto based on the video installation.

The gallery will be open to the public during regular hours (Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm) for the duration of the residency, so that viewers can engage with the work/exhibition as it develops.

📍There will be a final event on Thursday, September 24th at 6pm!

🔗 Visit the link in our bio for a full project description and save the date for the 24th!

Thanks so much to all who came out to the premiere of “Magic Thinking” at Hauser & Wirth Thrilled to be part of Ridykeulous’s “Escape from Gay Pride”. “Magic Thinking” is a multi-platform project about a meditation group’s utopian aspirations as they collide with our current disturbing reality, mirroring the extremism seen on the far right.

Fugue: roads, (excerpt), 10:40, 2024
____________________________________________

Fugue is an experimental photo-roman shown on slide projector, made using Kodak Ektachrome film shot across Utah, Colorado, New York, and Rhode Island.

The images and voiceover reference and remake films from the 90s New Queer Cinema movement —My Own Private Idaho, Happy Together, High Art — that were formative in outlining and visualizing queer safety and love, often defining the borders of the possible. Fugue is an attempt to formulate narratives through the cracks and slippages around these reproductions.

Without vigilance, a story’s origins are forgotten. Rather than mechanically allowing other people’s stories to guide our lives, it is possible to get involved and narrate from a state of passionate participation.

It is natural to adopt other people’s stories to help create our identities, to fill in gaps in our own experience or intelligence. Stories become easily cemented and rendered inflexible, developing into assumptions upon which a life is lived

I stood twinned in her dark wells. With hair so pale and strange. Windowed away in another world. While the red sun sank eternally.

I didn’t know you could see. Yourself in other’s eyes. Or see the sun in someone else.

I looked into her eyes. So dark they seemed all pupil. Eyes in which the sun was setting. In which, I stood beside the sun
