A devastating interpretation of the song "John Prine" from the 2002 record Trust, presented by Providence, Rhode Island's Buried or Burned, @buried_or_burned whose EP Painting will be released early next year.

@brian_ulrich says: "Dan and Mike picked that one. We all listened to the original track for a while, and it seemed like it was all about feeling like a failure. Trying to be an artist and a parent and getting disappointment from all sides. Such a bleak and beautiful song. "

"I was always taken by how dynamic Low was live, like listening to amplified electrical wires, all buzzing but played softly. So, we tried to approach the song like that, with everything very amplified but played gently, very HiFi: the scrapes on the bass strings, or plucking the snare rattles. We also thought that if we could completely reinterpret the song as something darker, epic, and cinematic, maybe Alan would be our audience. We threw in all our tricks, noises, and samples from little kids, etc., and then Laine came in with a haunting, soaring vocal. "

West of the Sun by Laine Rettmer is an exhibition developed from Sinclair, an ongoing moving image and installation project examining Sinclair, Wyoming, a company town built around one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating oil refineries, and the ways industry shapes memory, movement, and daily life. Shot on 16mm film, the project draws on interviews, archival materials, landscape footage, and staged actions with local participants. Rather than following a traditional documentary structure, it uses choreography, repetition, and cinematic staging to explore how identity is performed within a shared industrial environment.

West of the Sun presents the project at a moment when its questions have shifted from production to form. Rather than gathering new material, the exhibition considers how images, voices, and gestures change when distributed across multiple screens, how sound moves through space, and how viewers construct relationships between simultaneous points of view.

WE MADE A SHORT FILM!

This past weekend, our @offscreenshortfilm cast and crew gathered in Hudson, New York, at a beautiful house that our lead actor, Jibz Cameron, connected us with. On the first morning, I drove to set with our gaffer/grip, Cameron, and watched the sunrise over the valley and felt like everything had fallen into place. We somehow landed on one of those warm, glowing mid-September weekends where you can feel summer beginning to slip away, with golden days giving way to cool evenings that hint at fall just around the corner.

And it all happened.

We filmed the entire 15-page script over two days, shot on Kodak 16mm film, with an incredible cast and crew who gave everything they had including long, 12+ hour days to bring Offscreen to life.

I am so deeply grateful to everyone who showed up and made this film possible. Thank you to the cast and crew who gave so much of yourselves to this short film. Thank you for the long days, the problem solving, the patience, the humor, the creativity, the good vibes, and for believing in this narrative enough to give everything.

I’m so grateful to every single person who shared the project, gave us advice, or believed in this little gay film. I want to especially thank our donors, without whom we never could have made this project.

From now until September 27th, we’re hosting another residency and exhibition project: West of the Sun, which presents the work of Laine Rettmer.

West of the Sun is an exhibition developed from Sinclair, an ongoing moving image and installation project examining Sinclair, Wyoming, a company town built around one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating oil refineries, and the ways industry shapes memory, movement, and daily life. Shot on 16mm film, the project draws on interviews, archival materials, landscape footage, and staged actions with local participants. Rather than following a traditional documentary structure, it uses choreography, repetition, and cinematic staging to explore how identity is performed within a shared industrial environment.

The residency will experiment with various presentations of Rettmer’s multi-channel video installation Sinclair as well as support the development of single-channel works and a libretto based on the video installation.

The gallery will be open to the public during regular hours (Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm) for the duration of the residency, so that viewers can engage with the work/exhibition as it develops.

Laine Rettmer is an artist and director working across photography, moving image, installation, opera, and live performance. Their work examines how images shape identity, memory, and collective imagination through staging, repetition, and performance.

Rettmer’s visual and time-based work has been presented at the Brooklyn Museum, the MIT Museum, and the RISD Museum. Their feature film Oblivion received Best Musical Film at the Cannes World Film Festival and Best Experimental Feature at the Touchstone Independent Film Festival. A solo exhibition of their work will open at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in November 2027.

Rettmer is Associate Professor of Photography and Expanded Media and Graduate Program Director of the MFA Photography program at the Rhode Island School of Design.

The big things continue to feel insurmountably hard and I am feeling grateful for the little things in my everyday that keep me afloat. I was not sure if I was going to make it to see the magnolias bloom, right by Brody’s bench in prospect park but what a sight. I am grateful for new love, new and old friends and new studio. What new vocabularies are produced by transnational dialogues beyond disciplines? We are thrilled to announce the publication of Lexicon: Volume I!

Beginning this year and into next, we will be featuring and sharing our archive of now almost 10 years of work. This book takes us back to our beginnings, as the first of several projects to frame and communicate what has been created by CAD+SR's research communities.

Lexicon: Volume I chronicles the experiences of the inaugural cohort of CAD+SR Research Fellows, who participated in three 10-day residencies over the course of a year and received fellowships for their projects. The residencies—held in Spoleto, Italy (2018 and 2019) and Mérida, Mexico (2019)—served as crucibles for creative exchange, intellectual experimentation, and community building. Through their unique, radical research, the Fellows engaged diverse and urgent questions, resulting in rich dialogue and collaborative projects. These transformative experiences are punctuated by a collection of visual and written contributions from the fellows, shedding light on the exchanges that took place during these international gatherings. The book also pays tribute to the faculty, visiting artists, and researchers who enriched the residency experiences.

Designed by @guilhermefalcaoworks (Guilherme Falcão), Lexicon: Volume I becomes more than a simple record—it is a living document that reflects the ongoing dialogue of a global community of brilliant, socially engaged thinkers and artists.

BIOGRAPHY

Brock Labrenz is a film and television director and educator based in Cologne, Germany. Originally from the Southeastern US, his background is deeply rooted in the performing arts: he trained extensively in the American acting tradition, studied voice work at The Linklater Center, and received his BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School, going on to perform on some of the world’s premier stages as a soloist with Ballett Frankfurt and The Forsythe Company. He earned his Diplom in narrative film directing from the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln and has spent nearly two decades making films, from intimate human dramas to the WDR Quarks series Science Cops. In the classroom, Brock teaches acting as a learnable, repeatable craft grounded in genuine presence and awareness. He brings to his students a deep knowledge of the filmmaking medium, a performer’s instincts, and a dramaturgical understanding of story, giving actors practical tools to make bold, specific choices—and to sustain a lifelong, self-directed creative practice.
