First dabblings with terracotta - duo of plate with feet, and little cup. Love how the yellow sits on the surface. 💛

Couple of cakey slip tiles made during a brilliant workshop with @philroot @spikeisland last year. So fun and sparked loads of ideas.➿

Looking forward to creating more collab tiles with @bobzlaing using foraged local clays from Devon and Somerset. 🪨

A lil’ mug I never got round to sharing… bit of a fluke I think 😹 On reflection, it feels a bit inspired by my drive right over Exmoor and across the river Barle to get to @ceramicsacademy 🌀 by @laingtateart

‘Passing Through’
Wool, cotton, twine, slip, earthenware clay
2025-26 (bit of a labour of love… 😅)

The one’s been made in response to a project I coordinated with the fab @laurakporter last year, along with lots of other great artists based across West Somerset and Mid/North Devon.

The project (titled ‘Passing Through’) took inspiration from the South West coastline and local landscapes, and explored what it what it means to live on the cusp of a place; from the ways in which we exist between built and rural spaces, to the intersections between different landscapes and environments on the edge.

Been enjoying combining the different textures and material qualities of fabric and clay… thinking about moving through porous surfaces and shifting temperatures, finding shared colour palettes, and exploring the feeling of being held. This object is one to be touched - the tapestry can be lifted to reveal a reflective clay surface hiding beneath.

Really looking forward to reuniting with everyone next weekend for a walk by the sea in North Devon! 😃 🌊

Glazed ceramic bowl sitting happily atop knitted merino coaster… pink Somerset alabaster peeping through the rock down at Warren Bay.

Such beautiful evening light lately.

So much fun collaborating on making this set of tiles with @bobzlaing (Title tbc)! 😊

Loved the process from start to finish… making our own slips with earth/silt/sand sourced from both our homes, then mark-making freely with sliptrailers onto terracotta slabs. (So much squidgy wet clay… mmmmm). 🤤

We handed them over to the fab @tillywashpottery who kindly bisque fired them for us… they came out completely differently (image 6), so we decided to give it a go with glazing them. The second firing drew out the different textures and colours of the slips again (such a mad alchemical process), and brought them back to life again. 😊

Also wanted to give a shout-out to @philroot, whose brilliant tile workshop we went to last year boosted us into action. Highly recommend! 👌

Looking forward to making more! 〰️

Honey glazed earthenware tile, glistening in the morning light. Featuring red earth from mid Devon and sandy silt from west Somerset. Snapped here outside Cara, the caravan... fun how the big crack intersects the slip trails.

Another one from the batch. 〰️

Fun combining the different qualities of the slips - smooth red earth from mid Devon and sandy grey/browns from west Somerset. Interesting how the latter is embedded in the surface and doesn’t hold onto the glaze… keeps its coarse texture. 🪨

Not sure where to put all this stuff… running out of room in Cara (the caravan). 🌀 taken in Warren Bay Holiday Village by @laingtateart

One of my faves from a new batch of tiles... bit of a character, cracks and all. (More to come, pending glazing and a second round in the kiln). 🔥

A few weeks ago, @bobzlaing and I had a really fun couple of days experimenting with slip-trailing, using slip we’d both whipped up from the terrain where each of us live. The redder marks were made with earth dug from Mum’s garden in mid Devon. And the darker, sandier slip is the silt/mud I collected just along the way from backyard beach (aka Wazza B). 🪨

After the initial bisque firing, the colours appeared flattened and not hugely distinguishable from one other (which was a bit disappointing, as they had been contrasting red and grey when wet). So we slapped a load of transparent and honey glaze on them and put them back in the kiln, then they completely transformed and came back to life again! 😃

Love never knowing what’s going to happen with this process… always ends up being some sort of surprise, especially with the glazing. 👀

Big thanks to @tillywashpottery for providing the earthenware clay for the body of the tiles, and for the general enthusiasm…! ⭐️

A sudden flurry of drawing down on backyard beach… things that have been bubbling away for a while, coming to the surface. Really fun! Followed by a beautiful dip - yay :) 🌊

Rock on rock on rock… rubbing onto exposed bedrock to create an impression of it with its contours. Solo stone sitting atop, bringing form, casting shadows in midday rays. 🪨

Something about exploring the thing, the impression of the thing and the space in-between them. The relationship between material stuff and how it’s perceived… the ‘image’. What happens when they meet? 💭
