🎉 Congratulations to the Palawan whale shark research and conservation team for a successful research season.

💙 A big thank you to the stakeholders that are an integral part of the research especially the local whale shark tour operators and fishers. 🫶

🎬 Artista in the house! Earlier this year we had a full circle moment for "Iyo Ang Dagat" our documentary film and impact campaign.

In July we had the opportunity to bring Iyo Ang Dagat to Barangay Mandaragat in Puerto Princesa City, the village and home of one of our film's characters - Fisher and Tour Guide Andy Leonor. 🐟🦈

📽 It was an amazing evening with ~70 members of the community present including Barangay Captain Hon. Lha S. Gallo who gave a speech about how the film had made her reflect on her feelings towards sharks and had changed her perspective.

🦈We also heard from other audiences members on what actions they felt they could take to protect sharks locally.

🤝 Iyo Ang Dagat was co-crafted with stakeholders to bring stories of people living alongside sharks to it's target audience which is coastal communities in the Philippines. It tells the stories of people like Andy, who work and live alongside sharks and rays. Seeing Andy on screen to then speaking in front of the audience was a truly special, full circle moment. ✨

Every turtle nest protected starts with someone willing to walk the beach. 🐢🌊

During nesting season, our Pawikan Patrollers are out at night protecting nesting turtles and their nests from some of the threats they face on land, from dogs, predators and flooding to the risks of being too close to the high-tide line.

It’s early mornings, long walks, sandy feet and plenty of hard work. But it’s also witnessing a mother turtle return to the sea, knowing her eggs are safer because you were there.

Last nesting season, our patrollers walked thousands of kilometres along Palawan’s beaches and helped protect thousands of turtle hatchlings. 💚

Now, we’re getting ready for another nesting season and we need people who are ready to get involved.

Field work is an integral part of our work to protect marine megafauna. We conduct research on land and sea and we respond to marine wildlife rescues in all weather. ☀🌦🌧

🎒Having the right gear is essential.

@bloodredclothing has supported #LAMAVE's mission for over a decade and one of our favourite aspects of the partnership is field testing their gear. 😎🔧

Anyone that has worked with our team know we demand a lot of the gear we use 😅
💪 we carry heavy backpacks
🚣🏻 we travel on all types of vehicles and vessels
⛈ we are out in all weather

🌊🎒And so when the new and improved Blood Red 30L Ranger Dry Backpack arrived in the office we were ready to get it out in the field!

💙 It is one of our favourite backpacks and this latest version is very reminiscent of our first love (backpack) in 2015 - just better. It has also grown in eco credentials as it is made from rugged recycled fabric and is PVC-free - something the Blood Red team worked really hard on achieving. 👏🏾

Vertical feeding! One of the team’s favourite behaviours to encounter in the wild. 😍

Whale sharks use vertical feeding to target and maximise their intake of prey concentrated near the ocean surface, such as plankton and fish eggs. By remaining almost stationary and actively drawing water into their mouths, they can take advantage of these dense patches of food.

Vertical feeding is one of the behaviours we encounter in Honda Bay, Palawan. Honda Bay forms part of the wider Sulu Sea ecosystem, where seasonal monsoon winds drive mixing and upwelling, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water towards the surface and helping fuel phytoplankton growth. This productivity supports a rich food web and creates the conditions for abundant prey which can attract filter-feeding giants like whale sharks. 🦈💙

This #WorldMantaDay, the theme is Collaboration—and at the SonoMARA Alliance, that isn’t just a buzzword. It’s in our DNA.
Protecting pelagic ocean giants requires a bridge between science, policy, and action. SonoMARA, Sonographic Marine Animal Research Alliance, was designed to supercharge collaboration across research, conservation, resource management, by supporting Manta/Mobula reproductive biology research collaboration initiatives.

Real, lasting impact happens when we bring every sector to the table.
SonoMARA takes regional and international collaboration to another level. We bring together academia, conservation NGOs, diving industry, policy makers and private donors.
SonoMARA was co-founded by Okeanos-UAc Institute and @c2g2productions Productions by Capt. Guilherme Garcia and Cathryn Castle Garcia, together with the @clearcurrents , to raise private donations used to purchase the equipment needed for research lead by Jorge Fontes @fontes_ecodive team at Okeanos Institute of marine science. The list of partners extends to Pelagios @pelagioskakunja (Mexico), @lamaveresearch (Philippines) @mantamaria_divecenter_azores, @norbertodiver, DRPM @governodosacores and @camaramunicipaldeviladoporto.
By uniting research, technology, and community action, we ensure mobulids get the protection they desperately need.
