I haven’t experienced the whale shark tours in Oslob, but testimonials from other divers have convinced me to avoid it!

A friend described the water as foul-smelling, most likely from not so fresh shrimp they feed the whale sharks. Another mentioned the chaotic scene of hundreds waiting their turn, herded like cattle into the water.  A friend found it “heartbreaking” which prompted her to cancel her tour when she saw what was happening. 💔

If you wish to swim with whale sharks in the Philippine but don’t want to go to Oslob, I recommend visiting Southern Leyte.

I was fortunate to snorkel with whale sharks through @sogodbayscubaresort. The day-long tour began with a 1.5-hour trip from Padre Burgos to Pintuyan. Here, we met local spotters from KASAKA, an NGO of fishermen who guide the tours and protect the Son-ok Fish Sanctuary, a prime spot for encountering whale sharks.

Our Dive Guide, Dave, provided instructions on responsible interactions with sharks. Maintaining a safe distance of 3 meters from the sides and 5 meters from the tail is crucial. No touching or contact is permitted, and flash photography is also prohibited.

A @lamaveresearch volunteer also joined us, educating us about whale sharks and the community efforts to protect them. They also collected data on the whale sharks we saw that day.

Feeding whale sharks is prohibited in Sogod Bay, which means spotting them requires more effort.

The spotters would spread out across the bay to find the whale sharks, and when they did, they’d wave their oar to signal our boat to go closer, but still keeping a distance. We then had to jump into the water and swim quickly to the whale sharks.

During our visit, we encountered three different whale sharks, each interaction lasting 5-10 minutes. We spent 3 hours in and out of the water. It was exhausting but also exhilarating! 😅

Have you snorkeled with whale sharks in the Philippines? What was your experience like?

Comment GENTLE GIANT, and I’ll DM you my blog post on sustainable whale shark tours in Sogod Bay.

Are you interested in diving in the Philippines while at the same time volunteering to help protect the ocean?

Here are some Ocean Conservation Groups that have volunteer programs that will put your scuba diving skills to use!

@marineconservationphilippines (MCP) focuses on ecological monitoring, providing vital support to local governments and agencies. Year-round, local and international volunteers can apply to join the organization in the capacity of citizen scientistsand take part in the work in Dauin. 🐟

@lamaveresearch (Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines) protects marine giants, including whale sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles, with research projects across the country. Volunteers can be assigned in places like Donsol, Southern Leyte, Palawan depending on your field of interest. 🐋

@institute.marineresearch goal is to use long–term and fine-scale research in order to get a more in-depth view of reef health. The institute uses this scientific evidence to identify areas of concern that they further study in order to produce locally lead marine conservation initiatives. 🔬

@coralreefandrainforestcp (CRCP) advocacy is to protect key ecosystem that host rich and threatened biodiversity such as coral reefs and rainforests through research, monitoring, as well as education and building skills and capacities in the Philippines. 🪸
