Alana Perino’s “Pictures of Birds” constructs a mesmeric evocation of memory and mortality in Longboat Key, Florida, where Perino temporarily moved to be with their stepmother and father, whose health was in decline. Here, family roles were rewritten as Perino’s sister became their parents’ caretaker and Perino navigated the belongings of their home. The series reflects on the entanglement of the anatomical, the ecological, and the ghostly in an environment arranged to affirm health and security, yet permeated by illness and impermanence. Perino has created an expansive family portrait that captures a time and place suspended between memory and dream.

✨ Completely floored and beyond grateful to share that I’ve been awarded the 2025 Aperture Portfolio Prize for my project Pictures of Birds. ✨

This work began with a simple pull—toward memory, family, and the ways hidden presences insist on themselves. It’s about the long reach of grief, about inheritance and disappearance, and about photographing not what I saw, but what was in the midst of becoming—part body, part mineral, part ghost. Flesh into matter, memory into presence, life into return.

Thank you to @aperturefnd , the jurors, and everyone who has spent time with this work. Your attention is deeply felt. Eternal love to my family—those pictured, and those remembered—for shaping what I see, and how I see in this world and the next.

The full feature is up now at the link in bio and will appear in Aperture No. 259.

For twenty-five years, Silver Eye has supported emerging voices in contemporary photography through Fellowship, our annual international juried photography competition. We are grateful to jurors Dionne Lee and Nelson Chan for selecting this year’s artists.

Building upon the Fellowship 25 competition, this year’s exhibition explores diverse themes including the bonds of family and home, cycles of loss and renewal, and the transformative power of collaboration. Some artists create installations or portraits that empower loved ones and communities, while others use handmade processes to evoke emotional and sensory engagement. Each artist reflects on their unique lived experiences while deeply engaging with photography as a powerful medium of inquiry.

Silver Eye is proud to support the Fellowship 25 artists at a pivotal stage in their practices and to bring their work into conversation together.

Alana Perino @lanapino
Pictures of Birds

Pictures of Birds is a photographic series moving through ecologies of family, place, mortality, and regeneration. In this work, photography serves as a spectral correspondence in and around Perino’s parental home on the barrier island of Longboat Key, where their parents chose to live and die.

The series emerged as the artist returned to Longboat Key to be with their father and stepmother as their health declined—a period when familial roles shifted and the island became newly charged. The images attend to unstable boundaries between body and landscape, animal and mineral, presence and absence.

Grief in this work is not a singular event but a condition that precedes and exceeds loss, accumulating through proximity and the repetition of looking. The series considers relationships between body and environment, attending to ancestorship and cycles of death across generations.

As Perino ages, they increasingly resemble their father, who once said he looked like his grandfather as he aged; likeness extends outward to egrets, shells, and their home. Pictures of Birds traces a threshold where the anatomical, the ecological, and the spectral become one another between memory and dream.
Presented as part of the APhF:26 Main Program, curated by Manolis Moresopoulos.

The MU Photo Club is excited to welcome @lanapino for an artist talk this Thursday!

Alana Perino’s work explores the intersections of home, family, and heritage. Raised between New York City and Long Island, they studied European Intellectual History and Photography at Wesleyan University, where their interest in belonging took shape. After working as a photojournalist in Israel/Palestine, they returned to the U.S., spending eight years in California while photographing American heritage sites. In 2021, they moved back East to document their own roots and complete an MFA at RISD. They now live in Providence, Rhode Island, where they teach at Johnson and Wales University. They are the recent Aperture Portfolio Prize winner and have many other amazing accomplishments!

Zoom link in our bio, and listed below, or join us in the Fine Arts building room A103 at 6:00 PM CST, Thursday, April 23.

As Fellowship 25 enters its final week, we’re excited to highlight each artist by sharing special audio recordings that accompany their work in the gallery.

Alana Perino’s (@lanapino) artistic practice engages with the entanglements of home, family, and heritage. Simultaneously an only child and the youngest of seven children, Alana grew up in New York City, the North Fork of Long Island, and the stretch of highway between the two. They studied European Intellectual History and Photography at Wesleyan University before completing the MFA Photography program at RISD. Alana resides on the unceded land of the Pokanoket, Wampanoag, and Narragansett in Providence, Rhode Island, where they currently serve as an Assistant Professor at Johnson & Wales University.

Pictures of Birds is a photographic series examining family, home, and mortality. The images—all made on Longboat Key, an island of beaches and migratory birds—emerged from an instinctual act of preservation in the face of their stepmother’s fading memory and the inevitability of their father’s death. The work deepened into an interrogation of spatial, material, and spiritual transformation. Perino’s photographs, which blur the boundaries between the anatomical, ecological, and spectral, endeavor to communicate with ghosts, deities, and the selves imagined and reimagined in response to life’s inevitable shifts and changes.

Alana Perino @lanapino (born in New York, 1988) is an artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. Their practice, which spans photography, sculpture, performance, and autofiction, is concerned with home, the nature of belonging, and perceptions of the self. Their work has been exhibited and published by Aperture, Lenscratch, LensCulture, and Palm Studios, among others. Previously, Perino has taught at Academy of Art University, Harvey Milk Center for the Arts, both in San Franciso, and at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.

This particular ecosystem within Longboat Key—the humidity, the scope of life—highlights how interconnected all of the different species are and how reliant we are on the shells, the mangroves, and the water to proceed from one generation to another.
