Pictures of Birds

Pictures of Birds is a photographic series moving through ecologies of family, place, mortality, and regeneration. In this work, photography serves as a spectral correspondence in and around Perino’s parental home on the barrier island of Longboat Key, where their parents chose to live and die.

The series emerged as the artist returned to Longboat Key to be with their father and stepmother as their health declined—a period when familial roles shifted and the island became newly charged. The images attend to unstable boundaries between body and landscape, animal and mineral, presence and absence.

Grief in this work is not a singular event but a condition that precedes and exceeds loss, accumulating through proximity and the repetition of looking. The series considers relationships between body and environment, attending to ancestorship and cycles of death across generations.

As Perino ages, they increasingly resemble their father, who once said he looked like his grandfather as he aged; likeness extends outward to egrets, shells, and their home. Pictures of Birds traces a threshold where the anatomical, the ecological, and the spectral become one another between memory and dream.
Presented as part of the APhF:26 Main Program, curated by Manolis Moresopoulos.

The MU Photo Club is excited to welcome @lanapino for an artist talk this Thursday!

Alana Perino’s work explores the intersections of home, family, and heritage. Raised between New York City and Long Island, they studied European Intellectual History and Photography at Wesleyan University, where their interest in belonging took shape. After working as a photojournalist in Israel/Palestine, they returned to the U.S., spending eight years in California while photographing American heritage sites. In 2021, they moved back East to document their own roots and complete an MFA at RISD. They now live in Providence, Rhode Island, where they teach at Johnson and Wales University. They are the recent Aperture Portfolio Prize winner and have many other amazing accomplishments!

Zoom link in our bio, and listed below, or join us in the Fine Arts building room A103 at 6:00 PM CST, Thursday, April 23.

Pictures of Birds by Alana Perino (2017–2024)

An elegiac photographic series made primarily within a family home on Longboat Key, a small barrier island off the Florida Gulf Coast, documenting the years-long experience of caring for a stepmother, Letty, as she declined from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and died in 2021. Perino began photographing the household in the years before relocating there in 2020, capturing the domestic environment as family roles reorganized around illness. The work continues through 2024, when Perino’s father sold the condo and left the island, extending the series beyond Letty’s death into a period of sustained grief and spatial dissolution.

Perino works at close range within domestic space and at a more expansive distance in the landscapes surrounding it, constructing a visual logic in which the animate and inanimate are held in continuous relation. The series resists a straightforward grief narrative by treating Letty’s presence as ongoing rather than concluded, finding in religious traditions a shared framework for ancestral remembrance.

Pictures of Birds

Category: Memories and Traditions

Before my mother descended into the underworld of dementia, she used to collect shells. Despite a preference for pool water over natural water, my parents chose to live and die near beaches. I’ve always feared that the shells she brought home would haunt her and, in turn, would haunt me. That they weren’t meant to decorate bathrooms and the bottoms of drawers. Even when birds pick up shells for food, they leave behind the hard mineral remnants to disintegrate and be reborn as something else entirely. In this way and many others, I feel the presence of ghosts. Pictures of Birds is a photographic series examining family, home, and mortality. Longboat Key, a Floridian island of condos and snowbirds, became the strange chosen backdrop of my parents’ fading health and their children’s mourning process. During my visits to Longboat Key, I immerse myself in the fears, aspirations, postures, gestures, and glances of people preoccupied with death and preservation. I encounter a home and a retirement community arranged to affirm health and security yet compromised by the ubiquity of illness and impermanence. I endeavor to photograph this as well as what may suggest the cyclical and ineludible nature of death and regeneration, acts of transubstantiation, psychological adaptations, and spiritual transformations. I try to embrace the reality that my camera always looks inward at who I am, what I fear losing, and how I want to be remembered. Now my mother sees ghosts while she’s sleeping and while she’s awake. Her body suspended in liminal space. I sit with her when I can and ask the ghosts to tread gently as we simultaneously die and are reborn as something else entirely. Some of the ghosts are my ancestors. Some are angels. All are birds.
