Works in progress by @sylviawaltering

Land Dialogues is an ongoing collaboration between @sophiemeganlee @pollypalmerini and @sylviawaltering , exploring ideas of landscape, time and making through a feminist lens.

Dialogue One marks the first public sharing of work and research developed through this collaborative process. For a short period, @bankleygallery becomes a project space, offering an opportunity to test new constellations of practice, share ideas with audiences, and foster conversations between the artists and visitors. This exchange helps the work to grow and provides a moment to reflect on what has emerged so far.
The project has been supported through the Manchester Metropolitan University Research Development Fund.

The exhibition opens @bankleygallery Friday 19th September 6-8pm and continues Saturday 20th 12-4:30pm by @land____dialogues

We showed some work-in-progress at the ECR SODA ‘WIP!’ Show. Good to consider new ideas coming from our collaborative work, started this summer. @schoolofdigitalarts / @mcrschart. We are also working through some text based work, some fragments of a collaborative text were shown alongside the imagery.

More to come and think about in the next few months.

Land Dialogues is a collaborative project between Sophie Lee , Polly Palmerini and Sylvia Waltering, that sits within the field of expanded photographic practice. Here they present creative works-in-progress from their first residency period in July 2024. The residency initiated a series of cycles which investigate collaborative research practice through a feminist lens. Exploring inclusive methodologies and devising strategies to break down barriers of participation to Practice as Research.

Printing yesterday with help from brilliant @somuchtoanswer

In the summer @sylviawaltering @pollypalmerini and I went on a residency to initiate the collaborative project @land____dialogues. It was a fruitful time of thinking, talking and a breath of fresh air to make work together.

We are carving out time to reflect upon the pictures we made and the ideas that have been percolating since.

Baby Cam Interiors / #wip

#quicknotes from @pollypalmerini: During our time in Scotland, I became interested in the intimacy and performance of the babycam monitor. Intrigued by the idea of spying into the pixelated monitor.

I was looking for it: how it might appear and how it might be moved and composed? What is inside and what is outside?

——

An image is brewing. A corner of a room, a piece of blanket, a lamp, the car seat, the mattress, the arm-chair - appears. An image appears.

Time was also experienced differently through the monitor and because of it. The baby cam allowed some moments to be framed. Without S and Z. But the silence and unclarity of the image, did not make them absent or distant from us.

—

The first images were obscure, small, intimate. What image might appear next? Was this intrusive?

It quickly became a small task for me, and then for Sophie, to consider how and what image might appear. Was it a silence performance? or maybe it is a conversation on how time has been divided in these last 6 days.

It made me think about passing of time and limits of time. Z might have been upset, and the baby-monitor activated, and Sophie’s time downstairs stopped. It stopped and started.

S comes downstairs and the baby-cam shows us Z’s sleeping face or the back of her head.

The baby Cam moves and ‘click’ - an image is here. I must be quick. Click. Click.

S come back down, the image has already gone away. Z is back asleep.
