This publication comes from a new body of work which considers the discrepancies between the imaging, rendering and experiences of the body.

Through re-photographing and considering the camera as a both a creative and technical tool for revision and rediscovery; the checkerboard becomes a space to consider the relationship between the measuring and embodiment of the self as an object.

Polly Palmerini is an artist and educator based in Manchester, currently working from Studio 13 at Bankley Studios.

Her practice explores materiality, malleability and the performative qualities of everyday found objects, alongside ideas of brokenness, damage and reconstruction. Working primarily with photography, she investigates new fictions and, more recently, considers the discrepancies between the imaging, rendering and lived experience of the body and illness.

Introducing you to Polly Palmerini @pollypalmerini — Checkerboard Studies

‘This publication comes from a new body of work which considers the discrepancies between the imaging, rendering and experiences of the body.

The publication is risograph printed and spiral bound, it includes personal writings from medical letters and notes.

Peer Matters is a group of fourteen artists from across the UK who make, share and muddle through together. We originally came together in early-2024 as part of a programme supported by Photoworks.

This is what happens when you bind books in @msoa.printmaking.bookbinding and ask @georgegracegibson to take some snaps of you with your books—thanks George!

@pollypalmerini and I will both have copies of our books at A Bigger Book Fair @peckham24photo this weekend and we’ll be floating around too. You’ll find Polly’s sensitive and brilliant Checkerboard Studies with Peer Matters and the very last copies of The City & The City with @taisuke_koyama & @_chapters___ will be with @surface.editions. If you’re lucky @richhigginbottom & @domfletch_ might also have a few copies of the limited edition Checkerboard print they made with Polly.

We’ve had fun binding our books this week alongside our graduating @mmu.photography students who have their own table at ABBF ahead of their degree show opening in Manchester, 5–20 June. We’re really excited for them, please do stop by this weekend and spend some time with their impressive publications and prints. by @pollypalmerini

We are excited to share recent work with you at @bankleygallery between 19th-20th of September.

Land Dialogues is an ongoing collaboration between Sophie Lee, Polly Palmerini and Sylvia Waltering, exploring ideas of landscape, time and making through a feminist lens.

Dialogue One marks the first public sharing of work and research developed through this collaborative process. For a short period, Bankley Gallery becomes a project space, offering an opportunity to test new constellations of practice, share ideas with audiences, and foster conversations between the artists and visitors. This exchange helps the work to grow and provides a moment to reflect on what has emerged so far.

Last summer we initiated Land Dialogues on residency at @kalewatercottage This summer we are making new work in response to collaborative works generated last year and our ongoing discussions around land and landscape - internal and external.
