Polly Palmerini is an artist and educator based in Manchester, currently working from Studio 13 at Bankley Studios.

Her practice explores materiality, malleability and the performative qualities of everyday found objects, alongside ideas of brokenness, damage and reconstruction. Working primarily with photography, she investigates new fictions and, more recently, considers the discrepancies between the imaging, rendering and lived experience of the body and illness.

The photobook fair showcases a diverse range of publishing practices, from high-production, cloth-bound books to experimental book objects, as well as the handmade, the stapled, the photocopied —and everything in between.

Introducing you to Polly Palmerini @pollypalmerini — Checkerboard Studies

‘This publication comes from a new body of work which considers the discrepancies between the imaging, rendering and experiences of the body.

Through re-photographing and considering the camera as a both a creative and technical tool for revision and rediscovery; the checkerboard becomes a space to consider the relationship between the measuring and embodiment of the self as an object.

This body of work aims to reference medical imagery, and touch on new representations of health and illness.’

The publication is risograph printed and spiral bound, it includes personal writings from medical letters and notes.

Peer Matters is a group of fourteen artists from across the UK who make, share and muddle through together. We originally came together in early-2024 as part of a programme supported by Photoworks.

This is what happens when you bind books in @msoa.printmaking.bookbinding and ask @georgegracegibson to take some snaps of you with your books—thanks George!

@pollypalmerini and I will both have copies of our books at A Bigger Book Fair @peckham24photo this weekend and we’ll be floating around too. You’ll find Polly’s sensitive and brilliant Checkerboard Studies with Peer Matters and the very last copies of The City & The City with @taisuke_koyama & @_chapters___ will be with @surface.editions. If you’re lucky @richhigginbottom & @domfletch_ might also have a few copies of the limited edition Checkerboard print they made with Polly.

We’ve had fun binding our books this week alongside our graduating @mmu.photography students who have their own table at ABBF ahead of their degree show opening in Manchester, 5–20 June. We’re really excited for them, please do stop by this weekend and spend some time with their impressive publications and prints.

Help us share our story 💔🎨

Bankley Studios & Gallery, a longstanding artist-led community of 37 people, faces possible eviction.

We’ve been in our building for more than three decades. An established feature of the Levenshulme area, our closure would be a blow to the local area.

Run by volunteers through a cooperative structure, Bankley offers a regular programme of free public exhibitions and creative events.

Now, however, we face the real possibility of eviction.

We face a period of expensive legal action and other costs (physical surveys and works) as we try to stay here. We hope to find a negotiated solution which allows us to be part of our building’s long-term future.

Excited of Peer Matters at the @photomonthlondon Hub on Sunday 26th October!

Workshop - Collective Photobook (12-2pm)
The Collective Photobook workshop invites participants to bring 1-2 images-ideally printed-from existing projects or bodies of work. Together, we’ll explore how to collaboratively edit, sequence, print, and bind a photobook.

Every step of the process will be shared, encouraging discussion, feedback, and idea exchange. Removed from their original contexts, the individual images will become part of a new, collective dialogue.

The final result – the collaboratively made book – will be photographed, and a digital copy will be shared with all participants.

*Last week*

Recovering slowly from sinusitis, I had no energy or motivation and didn’t feel like painting. I allowed myself to just sit by the heater, making small collages and monoprints.

Last Monday, to lift my spirits, I started tidying the studio and preparing for this Friday night’s open evening.

I hung up almost all the works I’ve made over the past two years - eighteen paintings in total. At that moment, the studio turned into a kind of magical space.
It occurred to me that although I spend so much time looking at other people’s works, I spend very little time really looking at my own paintings, and that they spent too much time facing the walls.

The next morning we cleaned the house and had some repairmen come to fix things that have been ignored and neglected for an uncomfortable amount of time, putting a lid on the anxiety that comes with dealing with such things.

For the rest of the week, I stayed away from painting - focusing on teaching, chatting, picking chestnuts, cooking vegetables.
I also went to see Marina Abramović’s show and visited Bankley Studios.

I realized how grounding it feels to take care of a space, and to take care of the small rhythms of one’s own life.

Hi everyone. This is Christine Serchia @chreees the director and curator of Bristol-based @serchiagallery and the publishing imprint @valentineeditions. You may recognise me from my July BOP Takeover - thrilled to be back for takeover 2.0 to share even more exciting additions which we will be bringing to this year’s BOP including book-signings, artwork, and handmade books making their Bristolian debut this weekend at our table (located next to @vikabooks ).

This will be SERCHIA’s second time exhibiting at BOP and I’m honoured to be taking over the @BOP_Bristol Instagram today to share a glimpse at our gallery exhibitions and a selection of the beautiful, rare, hand-made and self-published photobooks from SERCHIA’s bookshop. Thank you to @bop_bristol and @martinparrfdn for having us. X

For my final day of the takeover, I will be sharing more beautiful work from the artists of Peer Matters. Peer Matters is an artist-led development programme, supported by @photoworks_uk, who explore individual and collective artistic experiences. Alongside traditional crit group frameworks of sharing and receiving feedback on projects, the group has taken part in ‘grounding exercises’, discussion, movement, and prompts that foster alternative modes of exchange, reflection, and learning.

We will have a beautiful edit of limited edition Peer Matters publications including: “Leaning on the Landscape”, “The Seed from The Stem”, and “The Circle Makers” by Eva Louisa Jonas @evalouisaj / @practisenow, ‘He Slept, I Pushed’ by Phil Hill @philhillphoto, Mode d’Entretien by Margot Minnot Thomas@margotmtmt, and (tbc, but hopefully also) Checkerboard Studies by Polly Palmerini @pollypalmerini.

Also pictured is a new publication Hidden Tinders by Joey Seddon from the publishing imprint @hisdivinepower. Joey made this publication specially for SERCHIA x BOP - we think it was lost in the post, but it was such a special edition - I wanted to share it in support of his work. Please do follow each of these incredibly talented artists who are always creating new and interesting responses to the world.
