I’m just going to come out and say it:

This is what this account is about. I’m learning languages and teaching my children languages, and I’m looking for like-minded friends.

Ever since we lived in Germany in 2010, and our neighbors’ toddler daughter spoke 3 languages (German, Russian, & Polish) and her mother spoke 5 languages (add French & English!), I knew I my high school French was woefully shy of a worldview that valued multilingual abilities.

So I vowed to change that. I love connecting with people. And already this account has connecting me with moms around the world raising their children in 2 languages or more, fitting language learning into their busy days, and has inspired me, boosted my motivation, and hopefully has encouraged others too.

So let’s do this! 💪 Let’s be a supportive community, encouraging our families to engage in language learning, and let’s make it a priority during our busy days.

I’m learning French, German, and Spanish this year. I’m maintaining the German my children already know, and as a family we’re learning Spanish.

I’m excited to announce soon my 2000 word challenge, to bring you along as we learn Spanish from scratch (we are really starting it from nothing!), and to share my French & German progress.

Follow me and let’s do this - together! 💪

I’ve been obsessed with foreign language learning for years. But I’ve never really made progress. Do you know that feeling?

Let’s change that. Let’s go from, “I wish I was better at speaking…” to celebrating a language milestone. Let’s go from, “I never have time to study…” to using the time you already have to get what you want.

My name is Nina - I’m currently in the US, but my family and I have lived in Japan and traveled throughout Europe. We love getting to know communities abroad, and that means learning their languages too. We’ve found ways to succeed in language learning, but we’re also just making progress, just like a lot of you.

I’d love to get to know you and share in your language journey. I’m doing this with coaching from @elena_hebert_ and materials TalkBox.Mom - check the link in my bio.

Language learners, language teachers, language lovers - give me a follow and let’s do this! 💪

Thanks for watching thus far - when I’m over my cold I’ll record that voiceover again. 😅

Why watch the World Cup in Spanish?

Hola / Hi 👋 My name is Nina and I’m learning Spanish, French, & German. This summer, my family & I only watched the World Cup in Spanish.

Here are 5 reasons why…

1. It felt more authentic.
Soccer / Football is the world’s game. When we watched in Spanish we felt connected to the rest of the world.

2. We watched to learn.
I’m really a beginner in Spanish, but by listening to every match, I learned some expressions:
- ¡oportuna imposible!
- ¡suerte!
- compañeros
We started saying Spanish expressions around the house and looking up things we didn’t know.

3. We still understood the game
GOOOOOOOOOAL is the same in any language!

4. I liked the Spanish commentary better…
I had an opportunity to Watch the US / Belgium game in American English and it had so much speculation about the psyche of the American team. 🙄 Could you please just tell me the actual plays of the game?

5. We…. Don’t pay for cable.
Alright 🤦🏻‍♀️, it’s true, the real reason we started watching in Spanish is because we only had a streaming service that supplied Telemundo, not Fox. But I think it worked out for the better, don’t you?

I'm very excited to introduce you to my friends, Nina and Laura.

We found one another because we're all mums/moms learning French in our own way and sharing languages we're not native speakers of with our children.

We've got our own stories, methods and reasons. We're connected by our shared goals, values and interests.

You'll be seeing more from the three of us together, as we share about our learning journeys as mothers. Follow along as we share more about the hows and whys of what we're doing.

Took a little trip to Alsace, France 🇫🇷 via Castroville, Texas 🇺🇸, where they celebrate their Alsatian heritage every year.

Turns out the Alsatian language is a Germanic dialect- no wonder it’s so familiar. 🥰

It was Alsatian culture with Texas hospitality. 💗 Best of both worlds, across the pond. I can’t wait to get back to Alsace sometime but for now I’ll take it. taken in Alsatian Festival of Texas by @language.learning.mama

✔️ 1 Week complete! 🎉 Lots more weeks to go 😅

My biggest takeaway is not to work more than 15 minutes at a time. Sure, I get excited about a language as I get into it and I want to do more, BUT it becomes a burden if I start thinking I’ll work more than that. I’ll keep putting it off if I need a big chunk of time to study.

Telling myself, “it’s only 15 minutes,” keeps the momentum rolling. 💪

What’s a language-learning habit that’s been useful to you or your family? I’d love to know! Let’s inspire each other!

😍😮🔥☺️🙏 Which one fits your reaction??

These stats are from “2000 Most Common French Words in Context” - a book from Lingo Mastery, and one that I’m using to study French, German, and Spanish everyday until I know 2000 words in each language. My children are learning Spanish & German too.

If you’re a language learner, come share in this journey with me! This IG language learning community is everything. ❤️
