Gracias/Obrigado to all the first year undergraduate students who joined this year's Welcome Week Event "Latin American/Latinx Fiesta/Festa 2026". 🎉🌟

This was a great opportunity for Latin American/Latinx first year students to get to know the Latin American/Latinx community here at @mcmasteru and the resources available to you. In addition students got to learn about @olasmcmaster, @brasamcmaster and @labs.bhsc !!

We were so happy to meet so many students with so many histories and connections to Latin America. Hear from three students on their first impressions of their time at McMaster.

We look forward to sharing more events for this year and 🚨 we will be dropping the first event for Latin American Heritage Month 2026 tomorrow!

LANMU is here for you!
¡Nos vemos pronto! Até logo!

Drawing on 25 years of research, Dr. Andrew Roddick reveals how Tiwanaku rose to become the Andes' first great highland city, and why it ultimately declined.

High in the Bolivian Andes, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, lies Tiwanaku— often called the Stonehenge of the Americas. Around the end of the fourth century AD, this remarkable settlement underwent a dramatic transformation, becoming the first city in the highlands of Andean South America. What triggered this sudden explosion of political power, economic innovation and artistic creativity?

Drawing on 25 years of archaeological research, this talk explores discoveries that are reshaping our understanding of Tiwanaku's origins, the environmental and social forces behind its rise and the factors that ultimately led to its decline.

Dr. Andrew Roddick is an anthropological archaeologist whose research currently includes the Late Formative (200 BC-600 AD) and Middle Horizon (600-1000 AD) in the South-Central Andes of South America and the Late Woodland period (ca. 900-1650 CE.) and Neutral/Attawandaron (17th Century) in the Great Lakes region of Ontario.

Doors open 6pm; talk starts 6:30pm.
Presented in partnership with @hamiltonlibrary as part of the Anthropologists in the City lecture series.

A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, rattling much of the country, killing more than 100 people and sending residents fleeing from swaying and crumbling buildings in multiple major cities.

The death toll is likely to rise, with more feared trapped under collapsed buildings.

What can we do?

Stand with our Colombian student populations. 🇨🇴
