We were pleased to host a very special guest on campus yesterday — Alejandro Adem, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Adem connected with students, staff and faculty as part of Latin American Heritage Month.

The NSERC (@nserc_crsng) president was accompanied by members of the Latin American Network at McMaster University (LANMU) as he connected with students in a fireside chat, toured research centres and met with McMaster senior leaders.

Assistant Professor Rodrigo Narro Pérez, co-founder of @lanmumcmaster, says Adem’s visit is empowering for Latin American/Latinx students.

“This visit by Dr. Adem, a world-renowned Canadian academic who is proud of his Latin American heritage, provides students with important representation and visibility in Canada’s research ecosystem,” says Narro Pérez.

Community, culture and belonging were on full display as McMaster community members marked Latin American Heritage Month.

Hosted by the Latin American Network at McMaster University (LANMU), the celebration brought together students, staff, faculty and members of the Hamilton community to celebrate the stories and experiences that shape Latin American and Latinx communities on our campus and beyond.

From dance performances to a student research showcase exploring topics such as migrant worker justice, mental health, identity and belonging, the event highlighted the power of representation and community.

🎥 Join us for a special screening of “Karuara: People of the River” 🎥

This award-winning documentary follows Mari Luz Canaquiri and the Kukama women’s federation as they work to defend the Marañón River and have it recognized as rights bearing entity. The film, which combines hand-painted animation and documentary footage, was created through a collaborative process that saw co-directors Stephanie Boyd and Miguel Aráoz Cartagena working closely with Kukama artists, journalists, and community members, including Canaquiri herself. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stephanie Boyd, facilitated by Dr. Rodrigo Narro Pérez and Andrea Vela Alarcón.

🎥 Karuara: People of the River
🌟 A Screening and Discussion with Stephanie Boyd
📆 October 29, 2026, 7-9pm
📍Robinson Memorial Theatre (Chester New Hall 103), McMaster University

“Mari Luz Canaquiri says her river is the ‘ɨa’ – the center, life force and mother. Her river deep in Peru’s Amazon provides fish to eat, a transport route and a place to swim and relax. But it is also much more. Underneath the surface live the Karuara, which means 'people of the river' in her native tongue.” (Karuara website)

This event is co-hosted and sponsored by the Arts & Science Program, the Department of Communication Studies & Media Arts, the Department of English & Cultural Studies, the Global Peace & Social Justice Program, the Latin American Network at McMaster University, the Mary Heersink School of Global Health & Social Medicine, the McMaster University Libraries, the School of the Arts, and the School of Earth, Environment, and Society at McMaster University.

LATIN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH 🌎

Since 2018, Canada officially recognizes the month of October as Latin American Heritage Month to acknowledge the significant social, economic, political, and cultural contributions of the Latin American and Latinx community. While this is a month of celebration, it is also important for us to use this time to start conversations on the social and political barriers and crucial issues that Latin Americans and newcomers in Canada face on an ongoing basis.

The connections between Latin American and Black communities have been linked since the Transatlantic Slave Trade, leading to the development of multi-racial communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite systemic attempts at assimilation and erasure, Afro-descendant communities continue to preserve vital cultural, spiritual, and linguistic traditions.

2026 Celebration of Latin American Heritage Month
