🥚 New Music Inc. - Los Angeles Cohort Feature: ORACLE EGG! (Link in bio for the full story) 🥚

Oracle Egg is an artist-run incubator program for experimental music and performance, inhabiting a 3,000-square-foot loft in DTLA’s Fashion District. The organization is led by Melissa Achten and Eli Klausner, two interdisciplinary composers, multi-instrumentalists, and curators with international professional experience. “As artists ourselves, we were excited about the idea of starting a space and series that would speak directly to the needs of the community: a place where new works were not only presented, but also developed.”

“Despite its size, Los Angeles is somewhat lacking in venues that support large-scale work that can be developed and presented on-site. As artists ourselves, we've experienced first-hand the frustration of trying to load-in, set up, and perform ambitious work in a space that has a high volume of shows.” For artists developing nuanced work that conventional venues cannot accommodate, Oracle Egg offers an unusually flexible setting.

🥚 Read more about Oracle Egg in a blog post by Draculeia L. Sewick, via the link in our bio. 🥚

New Music USA is a national non-profit dedicated to nurturing a vibrant and inclusive community for artists and listeners. In October 2025, New Music USA named 10 new music groups and organizations as the awardees for their New Music Inc. - Los Angeles (NMI-LA) program, including Oracle Egg. NMI-LA is a city-specific incubator initiative supporting small-budget, artist-centered new music groups and organizations through pivotal stages of organizational growth. Each NMI-LA awardee receives financial support, 17 months of mentorship, and hands-on skill-building in a cohort environment, facilitated by Program Coordinator Los Angeles Performance Practice (LAPP), who serves as a Los Angeles-based liaison to the New Music USA staff. NMI-LA is supported by the Music Man Foundation and Perenchio Foundation.

✨ MEET LAPP'S FIELD INITIATIVES INTERN: DRACULEIA L. SEWICK! LINK IN BIO FOR INTERVIEW ✨

“Being a person of color, queer, and disabled — not only means that I subvert the norm," says Draculeia L. Sewick, "but it can also mean being othered by communities that were meant for one aspect of my identity because of an intersecting aspect. So I’m very much interested in unconventional themes, philosophical controversies, and contemporary challenges against conservative perspectives.”

Through the Los Angeles County Arts & Culture Arts Internship Program (AIP), LAPP is thrilled to offer annual paid internships to current undergrads and recent grads in LA County.

Draculeia has been an integral part of the Los Angeles Performance Practice team as we work to administer the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships. Read more about their inspirations as an artist, the mission and purpose of their work, and their interest in working with LAPP, via the link in our Instagram bio.

Draculeia L. Sewick is an emerging illustrator and author whose transdisciplinary practice explores the inherent nonconformity of intersectionality — particularly among POC, Queer, and Disabled identities. Their artistry began with illustrations and digital paintings featuring gothic, spiritual, and multicultural surrealism that portrays the unique textures of diverse narratives. Expanding into theater, film, and literature, they continue to develop their practice with an artistic mission to dissect the psychological, sociological, and philosophical contrasts of identity culture.

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Sophia Cleary! @_sophia_cleary - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

Cohort member Sophia Cleary (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist focused on performance and liveness. Making her work through the lens of the fool, or trickster, Sophia uses play as a method and critical position to engage her audience in a system where power dynamics necessarily shift. In our latest Los Angeles Performance Practice Blog interview, Sophia shares with Jazz Zhu about comedy, vulnerability, and, of course, power.

“I come into a theater, okay, great. I know exactly what it is I’m supposed to do as an audience member, and I’m kind of like, how can we push against those scripts? And if we can start transgressing the scripts given to us in the theater, then how can we get comfortable enough with the discomfort of that to do that outside of the theater, too?”

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Nadene Pita! @nadenepita - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

ACCELERATOR cohort member Nadene Pita is a Māori interdisciplinary performance artist and musician who synthesizes a breathtaking sound bouquet of contemporary-intercultural music, experimental jazz, and a unique voice. After being awarded a 2023 Emerging Artist Fellowship by the California Arts Council, she returns to Los Angeles Performance Practice as part of ACCELERATOR. In this interview conducted by Jazz Zhu and edited by Draculeia L. Sewick, Nadene reflects on her early relationship with dance and music, the tension between balancing advocacy for others with advocacy for herself, and her experience as an immigrant artist in Australia and America.

“… Being Māori, I did not, when I was younger, even connect that with my practice. It’s become more and more important, but it was something that I grew up feeling not positive about. So, to feel like I can embrace that now has been a really beautiful process for me.”
