✨ Closing out July, stepping into August with gratitude ✨

July was unforgettable — I celebrated my birthday with a book signing at Roving Heights Landmark Oniru and launched the Toru Mini Doll 💛

Two years ago, I released my children’s book Toru and the Mango Seed. This year’s signing was a joyful continuation — connecting with readers, sharing stories, and celebrating storytelling ✨

Grateful to God, my family, friends, and everyone who showed up to support. Your love made the day extra special!

💭 What do you love most about children’s stories — imagination, lessons, or nostalgia?

Had a WhatsApp chat today, and heard of 3 people we all knew who had passed away suddenly. So I wrote a list of important realities that we should keep front and centre .

What others would you add to my list?
MY EXTENDED LIST 👇🏾
✨ Celebrate all whom you love the best you can.
✨ Intentionally keep in touch with them.
✨ Let them know how much they mean to you.
✨ Tell them what inspires you about them.
✨ Never keep malice.
✨ Say all the things we say about people when they’re dead to them while they are alive.
✨ Life’s fragility — every breath is a gift.
✨ Forgiveness as freedom — let go of grudges.
✨ Legacy of kindness — how we made others feel matters most.
✨ Presence over perfection — being there is enough.
✨ Faith and gratitude — thank God for each day and each person still here.

💫 Death reminds us that love, kindness, and connection are what truly endure.
Even Jesus wept — grief is human, but love is eternal.

Mosquitos Don’t Sing Anymore by Omolara Cookey: a cartoon commentary with some scientific facts

Mosquitos have gone silent, stealthy, and smarter than ever. From buzzing warnings to ninja landings on eyelids, they’ve evolved into pesticide‑resistant super‑villains. And somehow, they always choose me as their premium organic buffet.
This is my open call to repellents everywhere — save my skin, save my eyelids!

Another satisfied reader! @laracookey

Thank you for picking up What If Sasha Storm Lost Her Voice? and taking Sasha’s journey with you.

"Some stories entertain you. Others make you pause and ask yourself questions.”

A story about voice, identity, love, and the question of who we become when the thing that once defined us is suddenly taken away.

Sasha’s story is more than losing her voice.
It’s about discovering what remains when the world can no longer recognize you by the thing it once knew you for.

And we love seeing readers experience that journey.

Have you read Sasha Storm yet? What part of her story stayed with you?

Copies of What If Sasha Storm Lost Her Voice? are available at Jazzhole Bookstore in Ikoyi, Lagos and on Amazon UK, Amazon US & African Books Collective 📚

A great friend gave us a few super delicious mangoes from the middle belt of Nigeria. Don't mind their mottled skin - everything was edible - the skin, the juicy pulp and I stopped short at the seed😂.
There was too much for us to do them justice in time before they spoilt , so I went ahead and made jam .
I added some ground cinnamon that gave it a depth of flavour . I didn't want to have any wahala with a high glycemic upload, so I used xylitol instead of sugar.

I then made my labels , fixed them on the jars with cellotape , and all was well with the world .🥳✨🥂☺️
I still do portion control however , and have been enjoying a teaspoon with my Greek yoghurt with a sprinkling of chia seeds.

A wonderful time hanging out with my sisters, and taking in the absolutely stunning works of @chikaidusart #PureWater, a show presented by @smocontemporaryart at the spectacular restaurant space @arami.lag , a great backdrop for the artwork.

I could almost feel bubbles rising around me, as if plunging into water, just by looking at some of the pieces. I especially loved the playfulness of the children , captured so beautifully through his detailed study of their movement. The stippled texture of the oil paint gives the illusion of bubbling water droplets in three dimensions, which is incredibly pleasing to the eye.

The unexpected details in the acrylic-on-canvas works were equally captivating. My favorite was the portrait with the red vertical line across a woman’s face - that subtle division and shift in rendering gave it an almost photographic quality, like an old black-and-white photo reimagined in a contemporary way.

Welcome to September , the first of the 'ember months.
As I reflect on my skill sets , I am so grateful for, amongst other things, being able to sketch, draw and paint .
It's a favourite channel of expression and most importantly -of relaxation.

May the remaining months of the year open up for you, abundant avenues for self expression, relaxation and an enjoyment of the simple things of life .
