“Zinnia” by Lara Knutson (Part-time Lecturer in the School of Constructed Environments) will be featured at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan in April 2025. Crafted with her patented 3D Light technology where light itself looks like it’s floating in space, Zinnia is named after the first flower grown in space. It emits an otherworldly glow, appearing like a luminous, touchable cloud—a fusion of innovation and ethereal beauty.

The work is derived from Lara’s Masters thesis at Pratt in 2010-2011, under the advisement of Bruce Hannah. by @laraknutson

Inspired by my time spent on the beach watching the moon rise above the ocean and the sun set on the bay during the pandemic. This piece flickers with 3D light and other materials as the viewer moves around space.

Experimenting with color on color. New work on the horizon.
.
The best thing about New York City is that I can dare to have the audacity of having original ideas. I would even say that I founded a new art form with my masters thesis called “Aurora Materialis” by making 3D light bubbles and clouds of light that hover above surfaces. It’s truly mesmerizing in person. Even back then at Pratt in 2010-2011, I knew I had a good idea! Now, my work seems to be traveling the world….

ARTIST STATEMENT
I make light look three dimensional and mix color in space. Light itself looks like something that can be touched and even inhaled. As the viewer moves around space, objects create pulses of otherworldly light and sometimes even make rainbows. People are transported and curious trying to figure out what they are seeing. The different phenomena created and technology used allow for a broad range of work from miniature to massive scales. Nothing is static or fixed; everything is immersive and experiential as the surfaces are playing with volume and our eyes’ perception. My patented innovation is a completely new way of making light.

The best part about teaching is helping my students find their own voice. My voice comes from growing up on Long Beach Island, NJ and my Scandinavian heritage. I was very observant growing up and loved to watch the sun, water and sky play with light throughout the day, creating what I’ve always thought as an ever-changing theater performance. I’ve always loved how I saw the world- even as a little girl. I would say my work is simply born from my existence, my perception and the beauty around me. I love showing my work and it’s amazing when people want to collect it, but I’ll work whether anyone is looking because I need to because it’s not an option - I think that’s what being an artist is about.
