We're presenting Nazar at the V&A South Kensington on Friday, the 31st of July.

Nazar is a tender, intimate encounter between participant and performer in virtual reality, exploring care as a practice rooted in the body, community, and land.

Sessions will run every 30 minutes. Up to 3 participants in VR at a time. Spaces are limited, and registration opens on site [Room4, the Globe] from 18:30.

Wider audiences can watch the live and VR performance through a screen.

✨ From Paris to London!

We're delighted to see Nazar, co-winner of the Grand Prize and Impact Award at NewImages Festival 2026, continue its journey at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Presented as part of Friday Late × Shubbak: Body as a Vessel, Nazar will invite audiences to experience an intimate VR performance exploring memory, protection and intergenerational rituals.

Congratulations to Lara Kobeissi and the entire team. We're proud to see this remarkable work reaching new audiences in such an iconic venue.

NAZAR- نَظَر

On 31 July, Nazar by Lara Habib Kobeissi @larakob returns from Shubbak Festival 2025 to Friday Late at V&A South Kensington as part of Shubbak’s 15th anniversary.

Part memoir, part immersive archive, Nazar brings together live performance and VR to reconstruct the artist’s childhood home, tracing three decades of conflict, migration and a mother-daughter relationship shaped through rituals of protection. Combining visuals, sound, scent, taste and touch, the work unfolds through experiential poetry, recordings of surveillance drones, motion-captured gestures and oral histories, creating a multi-sensory experience rooted in embodied memory and intergenerational care.

في 31 يوليو، يعود عمل «نَظَر» للفنانة لارا حبيب كوبيسي، الذي قُدِّم للمرة الأولى ضمن مهرجان شُبّاك 2025، ليُعرض مجدداً في Friday Late بمتحف V&A South Kensington، احتفاءً بالذكرى الخامسة عشرة لمهرجان شبّاك.

يقف «نَظَر» عند تقاطع السيرة الذاتية والأرشيف الحي، مقدّماً تجربة تجمع بين الأداء الحي وتقنيات الواقع ال الإفتراضي لإعادة بناء منزل الفنانة في طفولتها. ومن خلال هذا الفضاء، يستكشف العمل ثلاثة عقود من الصراع، الهجرة، وعلاقة أم وابنتها، حيث تتجلى طقوس الحماية والرعاية بوصفها أشكالاً للمقاومة والذاكرة.

ينسج العمل تجربة متعددة الحواس، تتداخل فيها الصورة والصوت والرائحة والطعم واللمس، عبر قصائد أدائية، وتسجيلات لطائرات المراقبة المسيّرة، وحركات مؤداة بتقنيات التقاط الحركة، إلى جانب شهادات وروايات شفوية. ويفتح هذا النسيج الحسي مساحة للتأمل في الذاكرة المتجسدة، الحنين، والرعاية العابرة للأجيال.

To mark 15 years of championing contemporary Arab and SWANA arts, Shubbak collaborates with V&A to present //Friday Late: Body as a Vessel//; an evening of live music, performance, installation, fashion, food, film, and collective encounters unfolding across the museum.

Featuring @tootard , @kazna.asker , @yasmeen.ayyashi , @kasrajalilipour , Athar and more, the programme brings together artists whose practices move across memory, resistance, ritual, imagination and joy.

Co-curated by Shubbak and V&A South Kensington, Friday Late: Body as a Vessel invites audiences to experience the museum through a series of multi-sensorial artistic encounters.

Artists Lara Habib Kobeissi and Thomas Buckley will be co-facilitating a two-day workshop at Beirut Art Center in collaboration with the British Council.

Through hands-on experimentation, participants will explore how they might integrate accessible digital tools into their creative practices. From sculpting and scanning objects to movement and animating characters, the workshops open a playground to rethink practices of care and collaboration across physical and digital realms.

Session 1 - Saturday, 4 October | 1:00–5:00 pm
Participants will sculpt artefacts using clay and paper, and play with body movement and gestures, while documenting their process through 3D scanning and motion-capture techniques.

Session 2 - Tuesday, 7 October | 5:00–7:00 pm
Building on the first session, participants will draw on the shared library of animations and artefacts they created to collectively compose a scene in Unreal Engine.

Nazar is an intimate exploration of shared rituals of care, embodied archiving, and worldbuilding under military surveillance. It unfolds as experiential poetry within evil eye protection sessions, communicated primarily through touch.

The work draws on practices passed down from mother to daughter in Southern Lebanon, extended virtually into a speculative future. It culminates in a choreography of motion-captured gestures and chants sealing a covenant between a people and their land.

With support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and B3 Media.

One slot is available every 30 minutes, one participant per slot.
