Words still feel inadequate. Today we said farewell to Alfred Brendel, who passed on Monday 16 June 2025. The service was beautiful, filled with memories and music he cherished, played by those who carried his spirit in every note. I have no doubt he would have had something wry and brilliant to say about it all.

It is hard to grasp that he is gone, he has left an immense void. His influence runs deep - not only in the lives he touched personally, but in the generations of musicians shaped by his artistry. He set a standard; a rare fusion of intellect, wit and integrity.

I was fortunate enough to learn from him over the course of the past ten years, to witness his artistry up close and to share moments of laughter that revealed the warmth beneath the formidable mind. His legacy is vast and it lives on in every piece of music we play.

Thank you, Mr Brendel, for every note, every silence and everything you gave us. Rest well.

Here are some of my favourite photos of us together, capturing the essence of his being and his humour - they will forever make me smile. by @laramelda

Croatia 🇭🇷

A trip that started with crystal-clear water, old towns, mountains, gorgeous sunsets and some of the most beautiful places we’d seen and ended very differently to how we imagined.

The wildfire in Omiš cut our time there short and put everything into perspective very quickly. We could pack our things and leave; for the people who call it home, it wasn’t that simple. Watching a place we’d spent our days enjoying change so dramatically overnight is something that has stayed with me.

It’s easy to hear about rising temperatures, wildfires and a changing climate and feel removed from it all. It’s different when you see the reality of it in front of you. Experiences like this are a reminder that the places we love aren’t guaranteed to stay as we know them. This planet is our home and we all have a responsibility to take better care of it.

I hope Omiš and everyone affected have been able to rebuild and recover since. We left Croatia with a lot still unseen and I’d love to go back one day - not just to revisit the places we loved but to keep exploring the country we didn’t get the chance to finish seeing ♥️

The morning after the wildfire - the biggest ever recorded in Croatia - came terrifyingly close to taking our Airbnb with it. It was a frightening night for everyone in Omiš and one I won’t forget. I hope the community has been able to recover and get back on its feet since 🙏♥️ taken in Croatia by @laramelda

Still thinking about this magical evening at the Carducci Festival, performing with the @carducciquartet in this breathtaking setting. There’s something so special about making music in a place so rich in history and beauty - from the soaring Gothic Revival architecture, intricately painted walls, elaborately carved stonework and extraordinary stained glass, to the warm, intimate atmosphere that seems to draw everyone a little closer to the music. Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a memorable night✨🎹🎻

I know I’ve been a little quiet on here lately, but there’s been so much happening behind the scenes that I can’t wait to share with you all soon.

That said, there was no way I could let these lovely photos taken by @racingfranco stay in my camera roll ♥️ It was such a joy to be reunited with my beloved @carducciquartet at their beautiful festival in Highnam. A weekend filled with wonderful music, inspiring colleagues, cherished friendships and the kind of memories that remind me why I love what I do.

More soon I promise! ✨ by @laramelda

“Magic in the air at the National Gallery as Jessica Duchen and Lara Melda told the moving story of resilience and courage as Myra Hess became a National Treasure with the concerts that helped save people’s soul during the Second World War.

10th October 1939 was celebrated today in 2025 with the piano in the same spot and in the same gallery.

A story told in words and music. The words spoken with remarkable intensity and the presence of an actress who has lived with and digested these words. She knows the poignant significance of what made Dame Myra every bit a hero as Churchill when our country was under siege. The people needed Hope, Courage and Solace and Myra showed them that music could be a soothing balm for such terrifying experiences.

Lara playing with the same authority and superb musicianship that Uncle Tobbs had bequeathed to his star student. A sense of colour and beauty where every note spoke so eloquently. She could make the music come vividly to life, just as Myra Hess could do.

Lara brought beauty and an architectural understanding to the first Ballade where even the jeux perlé cascades of notes were given a shape and meaning and not used as an egoistic showpiece of note spinning self gratification. Lara gave back to Chopin what his genius rightly deserves and she received an ovation from a distinguished audience, one or two even remember hearing Dame Myra too.

The seriousness and musicianship she brought to Beethoven was indeed worthy of Dame Myra. Even the final note was placed with perfection instead of the more usual nonchalant indifference of lesser musicians.

Jessica with an extraordinary presence after years of researching her National Treasure and Lara playing a Shigeru Kawai and filling Room 36 with music making of the same aristocratic beauty and magnificence as Dame Myra Hess all those years ago.

What a tribute to our National Treasure and we could enjoy such mastery without even paying a shilling!”
