Yesterday, four of our region’s leading public arts funders came together for a rare joint convening: the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, LA County Department of Arts and Culture, and City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

We’re especially grateful to have received support from all four this year—investments that have helped make LARA’s work along the Los Angeles River possible.
The energy in the room was a reminder of what makes Los Angeles such a vibrant center of creativity: an extraordinary community of artists, cultural organizations, public agencies, and advocates working every day to shape the cultural life of our region.

As Los Angeles looks toward an important few years ahead, we’re excited to be part of this community and grateful to everyone doing the work to strengthen, expand, and reimagine what arts and culture can look like across our city. @neaarts @calartscouncil @lacountyarts @culture_la taken in The Vision Theater at Leimert Park Village by @lariverarts

Twenty-two artist-designed flags came together to form our River Assembly, moving with the breeze along the Los Angeles River (Paayme Paxaayt)

Much love to all the artists who made it possible 💙

Every city has places that shape how people experience it. We believe the Los Angeles River deserves to be one of those places.

A place where artists create.
A place where communities gather.
A place where nature and culture meet.

Today's Los Angeles Times article explores the growing movement to reimagine the river through arts and culture, and we're honored that the inaugural River Solstice Festival is part of that story.

The article is a reminder that this work is bigger than any one event or organization. It reflects a growing community of artists, cultural organizations, environmental advocates, public agencies, and neighbors who are helping more Angelenos discover, experience, and care for the Los Angeles River.

Thank you to everyone who is helping shape this shared vision.

📰 Read the story at the link in our bio.

📸 Stay tuned later this week for our full River Solstice recap and more photos from an unforgettable day along the river.

Last Sunday, I led production for @lariverarts’ inaugural River Solstice Festival, a free festival celebrating the longest day of the year along the LA River.

After 3 months of artist & vendor coordination, programming, permit logistics (chile 😅), site visits, and more spreadsheets than I can count, we finally got to see it all come to life.

I love festival production because it’s equal parts logistics, problem-solving, and care. Bringing those skills to a festival here in LA—and alongside so much of my own community—made this one especially meaningful.

Proud to continue building this work through @noirstudios.xyz 🤎

Thank you to @noonprojects for being my partner in ideation, to @livingearth.la for saying my name in the room before I even entered it, and to @neaarts and @culture_la for helping make this work possible.

Endless gratitude to our artists, performers, volunteers, day-of staff, vendors, community partners, and everyone who came out to celebrate the river with us.

Here’s to year 1. See y’all next year 🫂🌿

Designed by architect and LA River Arts co-founder Elaine René–Weissman, The Pavilion is the Festival’s take on a Roman Piazza — a space for gathering, conversation, coffee, and intentional looking. Screenings, installations, and chance encounters unfold here in real time, without fixed hierarchy or schedule.

At its center sits Hertta Kiiski’s film Not Not a Metaphor — filmed across zoos, aquariums, ancient ruins, and distribution centers, moving between symbolic and infrastructural landscapes, tracing a fragile continuity between living systems and their representations. Austin Kahn’s hand-hammered sculptural stumps evoke the aftermath of deforestation while reading as fractured pillars or archaeological remains. In the courtyard, Cara Chan’s carved stone works draw on the sculptural languages of Paleolithic and Neolithic forms, translating them into a contemporary, embodied practice.

In the covered hallways, A History of Frogs’ conceptual design objects feel forged from future muck, The Fulcrum Press expands definitions of the publication format, and Tierra Del Sol presents intimate artworks shaped by distinct and expressive forms of making. Alongside, the Senses Coffee Project brings craft coffee and sound into the space for a slower register of multi-sensory attention.

River Solstice is more than a day of music and art—it’s an invitation to slow down, observe, and deepen our relationship with the Los Angeles River through hands-on community programming.

Throughout the festival, guests can join a series of free, all-ages experiences led by local educators, artists, and environmental stewards:

🎨 Bed & Breakfast (@bedandbreakfast_la) – All-Ages Creative Programming
From 2:00–5:00 PM, B&B, the creative practice of curator and educator Jacqueline Falcone and Remainders Creative Reuse (@remainders_creative_reuse), will host a drop-in creative activation centered on making, learning, and collective exploration. Rooted in hospitality and accessible arts education, the program invites participants of all ages to create together using reclaimed materials while imagining new ways of connecting to each other and the river.

🌿 Herb Club LA (@herbclub_la) – Guided Herb Walk
Beginning at 5:30 PM, Herb Club LA will lead a walk exploring the native plants that have grown along the river for centuries, sharing their identification, traditional uses, and ecological significance. Participation is first come, first served.

🦅 LA Birding Club (@labirdingclub) – Summer Solstice Bird Walk
Also beginning at 5:30 PM, LA Birding Club will guide an intentional walk celebrating the remarkable diversity of birdlife along the LA River. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious, all are welcome. Participation is first come, first served, and a limited number of binoculars will be available for use.

At River Solstice, we celebrate the river not only as a landscape, but as a living classroom, gathering place, and source of inspiration.
