Postcards from our 365 days of travel 🫶

We’ve honestly had the best year of our lives travelling the world together. Backpacking through 3 continents and 20 countries - we’ve experienced and captured a lot!

Before we left, we bought a new camera to document our big adventure. This passion project helped keep us busy, allowing us to showcase our love for creative storytelling and keep our friends and family updated on our travels. It’s amazing to look back on our trip this way 💙 by @larsroy

2:49:22 - 6 minute PB and a day I’ll remember in Budapest for a long time 🇭🇺

9th marathon and my first ever negative split (-26s second half) 🥹 I guess you could call it even pacing with some early GPS issues. Probably what I’m most proud of, given my tendency to hit the wall in the final third. To not let the dark thoughts take over, but instead I just cast my mind back to the countless long runs with marathon pace at Victoria Park. That gave me the confidence to kick on - a sense of familiarity that I’ve been here before in my training.

And after a disappointing spring marathon block earlier this year, it feels good to see the improvement and, most importantly, to be enjoying my running again 🙌 taken in Budapest, Hungary by @larsroy

5K with the @octopusenergy work team under a lunar eclipse 🌕🌑 17:49 chip ⏰ 15/965

7.5 weeks into the plan and building some good volume and speed with 110–115km weeks - feeling like I’m recovering better between races and acclimatising to the heat. Got @scott_truman27 to thank for that!

Here’s a simple change in my training where I’ve seen my fitness improve…

Background - I haven’t PB’d in my last 3 marathons. And while I averaged decent volume (125km a week, most of it easy) in my last training build - I clearly lacked some of the quicker Ks. So I’ve taken on some learnings from then, that I’m implementing this time round…

I felt super fatigued last time - and so I’ve stripped that volume back by about 20-25% (while prioritising full rest days). So that means I’m trading a lot of my easier longer runs, for quality sessions with marathon pace.

While I integrated some of these sessions last training build - the honest truth is I just wasn’t hitting the paces required for the targets I had made for myself and lacked consistency. I probably did 3-4 easy long runs for every 1 quicker session.

I found a big reason why I struggled was doing my long runs alone, and that residual fatigue build up from always being at the red line of my mileage capacity.

Now at the end of Week 4 of this build and I’m feeling confident in my body and fitness and the biggest game changer has been running consistently with @scott_truman27 💪 I really admire how he goes about his work, has an absolute engine and of course great craic every time 🙌

Training with people who have similar chip targets but also just overall goals in general helps you find something within yourself when it gets tough - something I found hard to unlock running solo on my longer pacy runs.

That plus the obvious social side, and week-to-week confidence built - I now no longer dread the long run with marathon pace, but look forward to it.
