I’m delighted to share that the new issue of Leonardo (Vol. 59, Issue 5, 2026) is now out, featuring The Chimeric Mind, a Focus Section I had the pleasure of guest-editing together with my dear friend and mentor, Roy Ascott.

The contributions examine a question that has become increasingly urgent: How should we understand intelligence in a world where biological, computational, and ecological systems are deeply entangled?

We extend our admiration and gratitude for the generosity of Leonardo’s Editor-in-Chief, J. D. Talasek, and Senior Editor Nick Cronbach, with whom I had the pleasure of working over many months to frame this very special and timely conversation.

Our gratitude also goes to all the contributing authors whose ideas and perspectives made The Chimeric Mind possible.

The issue opens with J. D. Talasek’s “Issue Welcome” and also features Diana Ayton-Shenker’s “Reflections on the Leosphere: A Chimeric Moment,” beautifully extending the conversation around this chimeric moment and its implications.

🍽 You Are What You Digest - An Art & Science Dinner

What happens when we think of the body not as a closed system, but as a site of continuous exchange?

LASER Talks Bucharest brings together Thomas Feuerstein (AT) and Simona Deaconescu (RO) for an evening exploring metabolism, transformation, contamination and coexistence where biological processes become ways of thinking about culture, technology, ecology and our relationships with other forms of life.

Rather than a conventional lecture, You Are What You Digest unfolds as a shared dinner and conversation, bringing the subject of metabolism directly into the experience itself. The evening is chaired by Natalia Marin and Alex Radu and realized with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum.

🤖 What’s AI ever done for you?

Join us for the inaugural LASER Talk in Melbourne: What’s AI ever done for you? A decade-long descent into machine learning.

Over the past decade, AI has transformed how we think about creativity, authorship and collaboration. But who controls these systems and what happens when the technologies shaping culture are concentrated in the hands of a few global companies?

Featuring Dr Betty Sargeant and Dr Bahareh Nakisa, and chaired by Dr Andrea Rassell & Dr Chris Henschke, this conversation will explore AI through art, research and human–machine interaction, asking how artists and researchers can help us navigate its rapidly expanding role in society.

LASER Talks São Paulo – June 2026

World-Saving as Radical Imagination: Science Fiction, Bioart, and Experimental Arts in Times of Planetary Crisis

Inspired by Octavia Butler’s vision of speculative fiction as a space for radical imagination, this edition of LASER São Paulo explores how contemporary art, bioart, and experimental practices can help us imagine alternative ecological, technological, and social futures.

Can artistic imagination become a tool for planetary care? How might artists, scientists, and researchers contribute to new forms of coexistence between human, technological, and more-than-human worlds?

Join us for an evening of presentations and conversations on bioart, ecological aesthetics, speculative design, performance, data visualization, and hybrid artistic-scientific practices.

Invited Speakers:
Alessandra Vetorazzi · Ana Passos · Belize Neves · Carla Lombardo · Corina Ishikura · Enzo Caramori · Estelle Flores · Henrique Oliveira · Joana Barreto · Maíra Vaz Valente · Pablo Lozano · Queli Martins · Roberta Naufal

Hosted by the Department of Fine Arts (CAP), School of Communications and Arts (ECA), University of São Paulo (USP).

Laser talks alert!! 🚨
12.03, 19h

This event brings together different approaches to experiences and phenomena that do not easily fit established categories of knowledge, including certain UFO sightings, telepathic experiences, and some therapeutic effects that remain unexplained. Rather than seeking to validate, explain, or resolve them, attention is given to how such phenomena are lived, described, and interpreted within specific historical, social, and epistemic contexts.

Attention is also given to practices of inquiry, description, and interpretation, and to the ways uncertainty can open new perspectives on knowledge and coexistence. Beyond questions of validity, the focus extends to the conditions under which certain experiences become audible, ignored, or disqualified, pointing to the cognitive, social, and democratic dimensions of knowledge practices, and to a plurality of experiences that cannot be reduced to a single framework.

LASER São Paulo - Chimeric Bodies and Machine Hauntologies

December 8th 2025 - Monday afternoon/evening
Local: Lupe Cotrim Auditorium, School of Communication and Arts main building - Professor Lúcio Martin Rodrigues Avenue, 443, University Town, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Theme: Chimeric Bodies and Machine Hauntologies

Chairs: Clarissa Ribeiro and Tania Fraga

This edition of LASER Talks São Paulo gathers two remarkable voices whose practices inhabit the porous borderlands between embodiment, technology, affect, and the spectral dynamics of contemporary media ecologies: Dr. Dalila Honorato (Ionian University, Greece) and Carolina Sudati a.k.a. Translúcida Bruta (Brazil). This encounter explores a sensorial, semiotic, and ontological infrastructure for navigating emergent forms of hybrid existence—where machinic hauntologies, algorithmic phantasmagoria, and the aesthetics of the cybernetic gothic converge with visceral bodies, ritual gestures, and the politics of becoming-other.

Dalila Honorato brings her long-standing research on embodiment, monstrosity, the uncanny, and the liminal tensions between phobia and paraphilia—work that has shaped international discourses through projects such as Taboo–Transgression–Transcendence in Art & Science and FEMeeting. Her perspective unveils how contemporary chimeric and hybrid forms—both biological and computational—reconfigure the thresholds of identity, intimacy, and epistemic risk in a world saturated with machinic intelligence.

Carolina Sudati (Translúcida Bruta) expands this terrain through her corporeal investigations at the interface of wearable devices, ritualistic movement, and the transmutation of psycho-emotional constraints into kinetic expansion. Her performative research unfolds across vegetal hacking, mineral ecologies, neo-extractivist residues, and trance-based practices that illuminate the raw material hauntings of the post-industrial body.

LASER Talks São Paulo | Theme: Nosy Artificial

Date: Monday, December 1st, 2025
Location: Room C6 – Computer Graphics Classroom
Department of Fine Arts, Building 5
School of Communications and Arts (ECA), University of São Paulo, Brazil

Chaired by:
Prof. Dr. Clarissa Ribeiro
Department of Fine Arts, School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo

This edition of LASER Talks São Paulo, titled “Nosy Artificial”, gathers international voices from media theory, digital culture, and experimental art to explore the affective, political, and perceptual tensions at the interface between humans and machines.

Rooted in the conceptual terrain of The Wrong Biennale's noisyPOPcorner – Frictious Self Embassy, the talk welcomes noise not as error but as excess - a zone of encounter where human subjectivity diffracts through code, gesture, and synthetic systems.

From AI-driven generation to wearable devices, from performance studies to generative design, the dialogue centers on frictions—those dissonances where art, motion, and intelligence co-evolve.

Invited Speakers:
	•	Leonardo Foletto leofoletto
Researcher and professor of digital culture and artificial intelligence at the Department of Communications and Arts (CCA), ECA/USP, Brazil

	•	Andrea Sick @andreasick2
