OPEN CALL: Earth, Climate, and Planetary Imagination

Environmental art has long engaged ecological awareness, but the climate emergency now demands new forms of planetary imagination and action.

For the fourth installment of Leonardo’s 60th Anniversary Focus Sections, we’re seeking contributions exploring Earth, Climate, and Planetary Imagination: From Environmental Art to Planetary Axis

We invite artists, scientists, technologists, and researchers to examine how art, science, and technology collaborations can contribute to climate literacy, environmental justice, and regenerative futures, grounded in both historical awareness and urgent contemporary realities.

We welcome historical analyses, theoretical reflections, and practice-based research that move from representation to praxis, supporting not only ecological understanding but also processes of repair and healing within damaged planetary systems. Contributions should engage the ethical and emotional dimensions of ecological crisis, and show how integrative approaches generate new ways of knowing and acting within complex planetary systems. Topics may include environmental sensing, data visualization, field-based practices, speculative ecologies, and climate-centered health and wellbeing.

Deadline: 15 December 2026

I’m delighted to share that the new issue of Leonardo (Vol. 59, Issue 5, 2026) is now out, featuring The Chimeric Mind, a Focus Section I had the pleasure of guest-editing together with my dear friend and mentor, Roy Ascott.

The contributions examine a question that has become increasingly urgent: How should we understand intelligence in a world where biological, computational, and ecological systems are deeply entangled?

We extend our admiration and gratitude for the generosity of Leonardo’s Editor-in-Chief, J. D. Talasek, and Senior Editor Nick Cronbach, with whom I had the pleasure of working over many months to frame this very special and timely conversation.

Our gratitude also goes to all the contributing authors whose ideas and perspectives made The Chimeric Mind possible.

The issue opens with J. D. Talasek’s “Issue Welcome” and also features Diana Ayton-Shenker’s “Reflections on the Leosphere: A Chimeric Moment,” beautifully extending the conversation around this chimeric moment and its implications.

What if flourishing doesn't resist entropy, but depends on it?

In "Flourishing Through Entropy: A Dialectical Reimagining in Virtual Reality Ecological Art," artist and researcher Jaewook Lee revisits Earth art's monumental legacy through the lens of Mono-ha and his interactive VR artwork Toward Entropy (2025). Across four scenes, participants dismantle a gallery installation, topple a boulder, water wooden blocks into living trees, and climb to escape a rising flood, rehearsing what it means to work with change instead of against it.

Watch the video, then read the full article in Leonardo Vol. 59, No. 4, part of the Focus section "Flourishing as Ongoingness and Collectivity."

Unclaimed bodies, autopsy portraits, and a duty of care: Michelle Stewart's curated exhibition puts contemporary art practice to work on the ethics of human remains—how they are classified, held, and shown—bringing artists, archaeologists, and forensic scientists into the same room.

"To Sand: An Assay" — a new poem by Jane Hirshfield paired with visual work by artist Francesca Samsel, featured in Leonardo's new issue focused on flourishing, guest-edited by Ryan McGranaghan, Renee Davis, and Nick Travaglini.

The collaboration began by chance, at a National Academy of Sciences event where Hirshfield and McGranaghan met, and grew into a three-way conversation about working across science and art. The poem traces a single grain of sand through six billion years of transformation: pressed to stone, fractured to beach, swept to ocean, and back again.

"Here, now, you are bedrock's interim bus stop... brushed from shoes, shaken from blankets before going home."

Read the full piece in the new issue, out now via MIT Press. Link in bio. Nine scattered circles showing close-ups of natural, sedimentary imagery, ranging from strata to glass to clay to rock to wood, over a windswept sand background. by @leonardoisast

OPEN CALL: Life as Medium

The use of living systems as artistic and scientific media has raised profound questions about life, agency, responsibility, and care.

For the third installment of Leonardo’s 60th Anniversary Focus Sections, we’re seeking contributions exploring Life as Medium: Bioart, Biotechnology, and the Ethics of Entanglement

We invite artists, scientists, technologists, and researchers to examine life not as an object, but as a relational process entangled with ethics, health, environment, and culture, drawing from both historical developments and emerging biotechnological practices.

We welcome historical analyses, theoretical reflections, and practice-based research that engage biotechnology, medicine, ecology, and the arts. Contributions should address the ethical, social, and cultural implications of working with life, and articulate how transdisciplinary methods can open new forms of understanding and care.

Deadline: 5 October 2026

A dome projection translates the sounds of people, dolphins, and waves into light washing over the walls of Museu Nacional da República. A hammock with speakers woven into the netting surrounds you with dolphin calls and a soundscape that responds to your movement. A fisher recognizes the voices of his dolphin collaborators in underwater recordings.

This is Resonant Waters, a project built around fishers and wild dolphins in southern Brazil, who have coordinated catches through mutual signals for generations. It is one of the last practices of its kind in the world, and scientists and conservationists have been working to protect it for years.

Matheus Montanari, a 2025 Leonardo-ASU Imagination Fellow, created these immersive installations to investigate and celebrate this unique practice of interspecies knowledge. His work's resonance helped the practice earn formal legal protection, with the dolphins themselves recognized as holders of cultural heritage.

Resonant Waters is one of the projects spotlighted in our 2025 Impact Report. To explore this and other stories of emergence, visit the report via the link in our bio.

What if the machine generating your images could also warm your hands?

In Volume 59, Issue 4 of Leonardo, Esther Rizo-Casado introduces Camilla_Horde, a project that installs a GPU inside a traditional Spanish heated table (mesa camilla), turning it into a shared computational system. Moved into public and cultural spaces, the table's residual heat draws people to sit together and generate images locally and collectively.

Guided by a commitment to sustainable "perma-computing" practices and a desire to recover forms of collective life that technology has quietly displaced, Camilla_Horde reimagines the computer as something to gather around, not apart from.
