Reposted from @humanitieslab Interested in seeing the work of award-winning ASU students and faculty? Consider stopping by the Humanities Lab & Seize the Moment Impact Outcomes Showcase on Wednesday, April 20th to browse interactive displays and activated presentations.

Hosted in partnership with Seize the Moment as part of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory Earth Week, this outdoor public event will highlight awardees of the Spring 2022 semester's Lab-related grants—Seed Grants, Amplifier Mini-Grants, and Beyond the Lab Fellowships and their corresponding outcomes. It'll be an opportunity to learn what the faculty and students have been learning, analyzing, conceptualizing, and creating in their Labs and beyond!

The event begins at 3:30pm in the ISTB7 Atrium and concludes at 5:00pm. Anyone is free to come at any time; no reservations required. We hope to see you there!

Reposted from @humanitieslab This Spring semester, the Humanities Lab is supporting two very exciting Beyond the Lab teams.

Meet Elevate AR and Sporks Up!

ElevateAR is a team that originated in the Humanizing Digital Culture Lab. They are also the awardees of the Beyond the Lab - Seize the Moment fellowship-grant. The four students behind the outcome have conceptualized Elevate AR as an extended reality framework for creating "distributed, place-based" AR art exhibits that will use elevators as a means of conveying a story. The students put it simply: "In an [Elevate AR] story, a digital window in the elevator car acts as a viewport into a far-away world; visitors physically navigate the floors of a virtual 'Story Building' using the car’s button panel." They plan for the AR-based art exhibits to integrate profound, immersive, cross-cultural experiences into everyday surroundings.

The Sporks Up team, from the Fall ’21 Lab - Food, Health & Climate Change, is similarly developing their impact outcome/ vision into a larger Beyond the Lab project. Their original outcome involved distributing reusable metal sporks to ASU community members in exchange for the a few minutes of their time in completing a digital survey. The survey was designed to gauge the ASU community's attitudes and habits with regard to plastic waste. The Sporks Up! Beyond the Lab team is now working in partnership with ASU Zero Waste to further their vision to reduce the impact of single-use plastics on ASU campus’ as well as to broaden environmental consciousness at ASU.

Candidates should have a professional background in academic editing or related fields, fluency with the Chicago Manual of Style, and experience managing teams and volunteers.

Participants in the Humanizing Digital Culture Lab will consider how digital culture is (re)shaping human identity, and how humankind attempts to humanize digital culture. An ArtScienceTech lens will offer interdisciplinary inquiry and creative platforms to engage with cutting edge initiatives in humanizing digital culture (HDC) through digital identity enterprises, XR and net-native art experiences, experimental publishing, and other innovations.

Named one of Good Business New York’s “25 Leading Women Changing the World,” Ayton-Shenker spends her time collaborating with individuals, corporations, and organizations to maximize their positive social impacts. She serves as the CEO of Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology, and as the Executive Director of the Leonardo Initiative here at ASU. Ayton-Shenker is also the founder and CEO of Global Momenta, the founder of The Fast Forward Fund, and creator of the Values in Action (VIA) program.

Throughout her career, she has worked with the United Nations, a variety of international organizations, and philanthropy initiatives. Some of the areas she focuses on are solutions for sustainable development, international law, innovation in public health, human rights, women’s leadership, and alleviating poverty. On top of all of this meaningful work, she also uses her expertise and experience to teach the next generation of social entrepreneurs.

The world seems full of intractable problems: pandemics, global warming, racial injustice, economic upheaval. These are huge problems that will require thinkers who are able to consider these topics expansively, take risks and make unusual connections. It is time to think inside of the box because so many others struggle to think outside of it.

Today we are celebrating three people who are hard to put labels on. Yes, they are artists, but they are also philosophers, engineers, designers, technologists. Ultimately, they are problem solvers. Jonathon Keats (Artist, writer, and experimental philosopher), Stacey Kuznetsov (Assistant professor, ASU School of Arts, Media, and Engineering) and Julian Bleecker (Founder, Near Future Laboratory) will be talking about their work and the innovative ways that they are approaching the world’s problems.
