I saw Zeina Barakeh’s @zeina.barakeh dazzling CYBOTAGE, huge projections exploring the ethics of neuroenhancement of soldiers at Catherine Clark Gallery @cclarkgallery recently. I was so glad she was able to be a guest on the podcast. We talked about her getting her masters in global security, her time at San Francisco Art Institute @sfaiofficial, and her grant from @asu.leonardo to do workshops with people about the implications and impacts of these technologies. There’s a link to the 17 minute podcast in the bio, or you can listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Excited to be able to announce that I won the Digital Innovation category of the Digital Literary Awards 2024, with the 'magpie translator webapp' The Songbird Speaks published by The Digital Review! I trained a model using machine learning to recognise individual phrasing in Australian Magpie warbles, and can convert this phrasing to text. Because science doesn’t fully understand what the individual, recombinatory phrasings of magpie warbles mean (but have overall understandings about the contexts in which magpies sing), the textual translations of their phrasings in The Songbird Speaks are poetic and speculative, rather than scientifically accurate. The Songbird Speaks uses people's own mobile phones and microphones in order to function, where magpies must be listened to in real-time in order to be translated. The ground work for this project began in 2020 with my Grey-headed flying fox AI model, which I had the opportunity to build into three new models last year for the Australian Magpie, Australian Pied Butcherbird, and Noisy Miner bird, thanks to a technology and art Imagination Fellowship with Leonardo. The miner bird and flying fox models use scientifically accurate knowledge on call contexts, whereas the two songbirds are much more speculative models that treat songbirds as poetic storytellers and world-weary watchers of human folly.

Yesterday, Professor Ana Herruzo shared the groundbreaking MEDIAted Membranes project at the Leonardo-ASU LASERS panel 🌍✨ This innovative collaboration is transforming urban spaces into responsive, data-driven entities that amplify community voices and address environmental issues through the intersection of architecture, AI, and real-time environmental data.

As one of the inaugural Leonardo-ASU Planetary Health Research Seed Grants recipients, this project is pioneering a new way to reimagine cities—by turning buildings into living, breathing communicators of our environment. 🌱📊

From Arizona’s climate challenges to global urban transformation, MEDIAted Membranes is on the cutting edge of creating sustainable, inclusive, and dynamic public spaces. This partnership is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary creativity and technology in addressing our most pressing planetary health challenges.

Excited to see where this journey will take us!

Something exciting is coming to ISEA 2024 next week! Turn your phone into an AI translator for Australian magpies, butcherbirds, noisy miner honeyeaters, or grey-headed flying foxes. Built from self-recorded databases of animal signals turned into tensorflow.js models. These works are made to select from a self-written poetry and language database in real-time upon hearing the vocalisations of these species. This research includes an updated version of my Ars Electronica award nominated grey-headed flying fox AI model (2023), my Australian magpie model The Songbird Speaks (2024) published this month in The Digital Review issue 4, and two new models. It is supported through a Leonardo Imagination Fellowship. #isea #isea2024 #everywhen #leonardo

Towards Planetary Healing ✨🌍

Leonardo, in conjunction with the Meteor Studio at ASU, invites you to join us at #ArsElectronica23 for the premiere of 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙓𝙍 by artist William T. Ayton.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙓𝙍 invites humanity to exchange ideas, engage in meditative flow, and navigate unseen pathways and currents of human connectivity.

Ultimately, 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙓𝙍 unveils patterns of conductivity portals encircling the globe as a vehicle for planetary healing. Ayton infuses the XR art with the guiding lights of Hope, Empathy, Awe and Love (HEAL) required to counter human despair and collective trauma from chronic social isolation, disasters, eco-grief and anxiety.

Launched in Linz, future installation sites draw attention to areas of regeneration, urban concentration, ecological concern, spiritual energy and personal inspiration.
