2019. Chapter 1, Race 1 of @pancelticraceseries.

Lathan was 3 years old, waiting at the finish line to surprise me. I’d had a tough race, been hit by a car, and lost my head more times than I’d like to admit. But seeing him at the finish made it all worthwhile. ❤️

Fast forward 7 years, and I’m taking part in Chapter 2, Race 1 — this time with that same little boy by my side.
Head focussed and matured with many lessons learnt.

We had to go back to the old finish line and recreate the photo.

I hope that he’ll take on something just as mad again in the future and we’ll get the chance to capture another moment like this together.

I also just want to say a huge thank you to the team — Mally, Bec, Toby and Barry — for everything you’ve done for Lathan and me, for giving him the opportunity to take part and for believing in him.

There aren’t many people as special as you guys and there certainly aren’t many events that would open their doors to someone so young and give them the chance to dream big and have a go.

We’ll always be incredibly grateful. 💙

At just 9 year’s old
.
.
Lathan Lauder and his dad, Neil have completed this year’s Pan Celtic Intro ride, and at just 9 year’s old, he becomes our youngest rider to take part. It is an outstanding achievement and testament to his commitment, resilience, and strong riding ability
.
.
Alongside the ride, they’re hoping to raise some money for Diabetes UK — a cause that’s incredibly close to their hearts. Lathan’s Mum lives with Type 1 diabetes every single day, and Neil also lost his father to complications from Type 1, so this is something that means a great deal to the family

Give them a follow and donate via their link

A little late with the update on the fundraising for Diabetes UK — there’s been lots going on!

A massive thank you to everyone who got behind Lathan and supported him on his @pancelticraceseries adventure. We’re absolutely delighted to say that a total of £2,400 has now been raised for @diabetesuk , and the money will be sent directly to the charity later today.

It’s a huge amount of money and will go a long way towards supporting the amazing work Diabetes UK does.

A massive thank you once again to everyone who donated, supported, shared and encouraged Lathan along the way. And, of course, a huge thank you to our sponsors for their incredible support in helping us make this possible.

We really couldn’t have done it without you all. ❤️

£2,400 raised — absolutely incredible! 👏

We couldn’t not do another reel for your viewing pleasure, guys! 😂

After the Pan Celtic Race, we decided to have a little downtime in Wales. What a treat it was — although there wasn’t much relaxing involved, we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

We got stuck in on the farm, and Lathan absolutely loved helping to take care of the dogs and puppies. There were tractor rides, quad rides, feeding the cows and chasing sheep around town every day to get them back up onto the Great Orme.
 🐾
Basically Welsh Farmers now- just need to learn the language.
🐑
We packed in plenty of sunshine, snow tubing, tobogganing, beach days, and chasing waterfalls. Honestly, we really didn’t want to come home, but the reality of real life has to take over at some point!
☀️
A massive thank you to Dan, Cerri & Efan for hosting us and making us feel so welcome. Our new adopted family ❤️ We’ll be very back soon! 🥰 taken in Great Orme, North Wales by @lauder82

103 hours 39 minutes ⏱️
10.4mph average speed 💨
1,000 wee stops 🚻
Endless laughs along the way 😀
Memories to last a lifetime 🧑‍🧒

We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated to our JustGiving page. So far, Lathan has raised over £2,000, which is way more than we ever expected. We’ll be keeping the page live until the end of July, so there’s still time to donate if you haven’t had a chance yet and would like to. ❤️

A mammoth THANK YOU to @restrap, who were behind us with absolutely no hesitation from the very start of this mad idea. Their kit was essential and made carrying all of our gear so easy and stress-free. If you haven’t got the rack system yet and you’re into bikepacking, I strongly advise it. 👌

@albion.cycling — a huge shout-out to you too! You went above and beyond, helping kit Lathan out with and even sorting me out with a lovely matching jersey. I’ve known the Albion lads since 2019 and genuinely think of them as friends. It’s been amazing watching the brand grow into what it is today, and we’re so grateful for all your support. ❤️

Lastly, a big up to Sam at @exposure.lights for helping us out with two lights at a great price for Lathan’s bike, just in case we needed to ride through the night. Thankfully, we didn’t but knowing we had them there gave us great peace of mind. 💡

Thank you to everyone who supported us, followed along, donated, cheered us on, or simply believed in this mad adventure. It means more than you know.

Pan Celtic Race - Day 5 – The Final Push.

After a reasonable night’s sleep on the ferry, we docked in Birkenhead at around 7:30am. We repacked the bikes, got everything sorted, and were eager to leave the busy streets behind us.

It was a welcome change from the previous few days. The route was mostly flat, and for once we were treated to a tailwind instead of battling headwinds. It made such a difference.

The route followed cycle paths and old railway lines around the Dee Estuary before crossing near Golftyn. Around 32 miles in, we made the all-important McDonald’s stop to refuel, refill our bottles, and use the toilets before cracking on.

From there, we followed the sea wall all the way to Llandudno, and the miles seemed to disappear beneath our wheels. Then came the Great Orme - It’s always special, and today was no different.

After descending, we rolled into Conwy where we had some familiar faces waiting for us. A massive thank you to Dan and Ceri for coming out to cheer us on.

As we crossed the Conwy River with the castle standing proudly to our left, Lathan suddenly realised exactly where we were.

“I know where I am… I’ll see you at the finish.”

With that, he launched a huge attack up Gate Street and dropped me in an instant! Rookie mistake though… he forgot it kicks up again onto the Sychnant Pass road before the final turn into the YHA.

Of course, when we reached the finish, there was only one person who was getting their brevet card stamped first.

Lathan crossed the line having completed something truly extraordinary.

We finished 17th and 18th overall on the Intro Route, taking 4th place in the Pairs category.

Five unforgettable days. Countless memories. One incredible adventure.

A job well done. ❤️

Have I just created the youngest ever ultra cyclist?

It’s pretty emotional writing this.

What this kid has just achieved is honestly out of this world. I never doubted him for a second, but I never imagined it would go as well as it did.

He’ll probably never truly know what this means to me. Sharing the road with him, introducing him to the crazy world of ultra cycling, and raising so much money for a cause so close to my heart has been something I’ll cherish forever.

I often think about how much I would have loved the chance to do something this incredible with my own dad. Sadly, as many of you know, he was taken from us far too young. That makes this journey with Lathan even more special.

He had a couple of grumbles on day two, but apart from that, he was unbelievable. He kept the jokes coming, had us both laughing, and even during the quieter moments, he was happily singing away or chatting to himself. His attitude never stopped amazing me.

He’s completely proved me wrong when it comes to just how much grit and determination he has. He took everything in his stride.

I won’t lie—I was nervous because of how young he is. I had to have eyes everywhere, every second we were on the road. His safety and wellbeing were always my number one priority.

Riding between 6 and 9 hours a day for five consecutive days is something many adults wouldn’t even consider. So have we just witnessed the start of a future endurance athlete? Because if he can put his mind to something like this at his age, I genuinely believe there’s no limit to what he can achieve.

More than anything, I hope this adventure has taught him lessons he’ll carry with him for the rest of his life and helped shape the person he’ll become.

There’s many to thank that helped make this possible (and in due time i’ll post about that) but for now it’s got to be about this little dude.

Lathan, thank you for convincing me to let you take on this challenge, and thank you for choosing me to be your riding partner.

I love you more than you’ll ever know. ❤️

Day 4 of the Pan Celtic Race 🚴‍♂️

Wow... what a day. It had absolutely everything.

We left the campsite and headed around 15 miles up the coast in search of breakfast. It was surprisingly chilly compared to the last couple of days and, despite the fairly flat roads, everything just felt slow.
We stopped in Carnlough for breakfast, where we found out a scene from Game of Thrones was filmed. After refuelling, we carried on along the stunning Antrim Coast Road. As the sun came out, so did Lathan’s legs. The views all the way to Torr Head were simply incredible.
🖼️
Then the hills arrived… and they meant business.

The climbs became steeper and steeper, with plenty hitting well over 10%. Torr Head was the real test. It was just a little too much for Lathan, who had to walk sections of it. Absolutely no shame in that when gradients are touching 29%! Apparently it’s the toughest climb in Ireland.
At the top, a local farmer who’d seen us climbing met us with a fresh, ice-cold bottle of water for Lathan. We stood chatting for a while, swapping stories. It’s moments like that that remind you just how kind people can be.

We also bumped into Mel and ended up racing her to the checkpoint! For those who don’t know, Mel is a Paralympic handcyclist, and what she’s achieving out here is nothing short of incredible. Massive respect.
💪
We reached Checkpoint 1, where Craig and Lucie gave us a brilliant welcome and looked after us. Something changed in Lathan from that moment. He suddenly had one goal in mind… get to the ferry.
The only problem? It was still around 58 miles away, and I knew the terrain wasn’t going to do us any favours.

We pushed on past the famous Dark Hedges before turning south towards Belfast. By now the sun was relentless, reaching 33°C. I’ll be honest, I was really struggling with the heat and beginning to fade. Every time I checked in with Lathan, though, he just smiled and said he was fine and wanted to keep going.

In the end, I had to make him stop at Asda for food and drinks… although, if I’m honest, I probably needed it more than he did!

Day 3 of the Pan Celtic Race 🚴‍♂️☀️

We had a lovely overnight stay at our Airbnb, where we finally managed to get all our kit washed and dried – it’s the little things that make a big difference on a trip like this!

We were back on the road around 7am, riding through the beautiful countryside of Killyleagh and Killinchy before reaching Comber for an early breakfast. The weather couldn’t have been much better, with glorious sunshine all day and a much kinder wind than yesterday.

The 10 hours of sleep worked wonders for the boy – Lathan was absolutely flying today, powering up the climbs and looking stronger with every mile.

It was great to bump into David and his daughter a few times along the route too.

We loved the Comber Greenway all the way to Belfast, super fast and traffic free. 👌🏼

The toughest test of the day came on the climb out of Carrickfergus, where gradients hit 12%. It was the first time Lathan had to get off and walk, but there’s absolutely no shame in that – those climbs are brutal!

We rolled into Larne for a well-earned early dinner at McDonald’s before making our way to the campsite for the night.

Today’s stats:
🚴 73.7 miles
⛰️ 4,446 ft of climbing
⏱️ Under 7 hours moving time

Not a bad day’s work after another long day in the saddle!

Tomorrow we go again, with Checkpoint 1 hopefully coming into sight around midday. Fingers crossed everything goes to plAn.
