things are looking up ☀️

back in october, about an hour after I took this photo, I got an email I thought I was never going to get. it was an invitation to an interview at the University of Alberta general practice residency program.

I didn’t even know residencies existed for dentists until I was in my second year of dental school. I didn’t even think to apply to one until the summer after third year. to be honest, the reason I didn’t consider applying was because I didn’t think I had a chance. I thought about my classmates - “they’re smarter, more capable, more likely to get in than me”, I thought. not to mention the competition from other schools!! but you never know until you try.

just getting the interview was a dream come true. I barely ate on that day. I had rehearsed my response to “tell us about yourself” so many times I hated the sound of my own voice. but I must have done something right, because I’ll be starting the residency this summer.

I’m so thankful to be able to have shared my journey with you so far, and I’m excited to take you to Edmonton with me! back to studying now; I’ve still got a few months left to earn this DDS!

had the awesome opportunity to meet with faculty and students at the UofA Faculty of Dentistry’s sister school in Dresden this past week, and I met some of the loveliest people and was able to share some of my experiences with special care dentistry with them. as usual, I forgot to take many photos at all, even in Berlin and Prague which I used as bookends to the trip, but I think these select few show just how happy I was to be there! by @laura.dentistry

life update!!

time sure flies when you’re having fun. I’ve been so lucky to start working at a @dental_choice practice right by where I went high school, serving the community in which I grew up. I’m also having a blast supervising students on one of their hospital rotations. the balance between teaching and private practice is amazing.

I’ve also been able to have a lot of time for myself and my interests, as well as to spend lots of quality time with friends and family. this past weekend I saw the @raptors play, which made me feel like I was right back in toronto!!

I’m excited to see what the rest of 2022 has in store 🥳

haven’t posted in a while, should probably make it a sappy one!

yesterday was the last day that all four of us residents would be in the same clinic together. next week @reid_boulet heads out to Toronto to start his oral surgery journey!! it’s awesome to see someone so dedicated and caring be able to follow their dream. can’t wait to visit you in my second home.

Also, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Thursdays while in this GPR because it’s a day focused strongly on prosthodontics…aka implant exams/restorations, crown/bridge, even a denture or two. I wouldn’t have been able to do a third of the cases I saw if it weren’t for the man in the middle here - Dr. Compton!

and to the other two lovely people in this photo, @ele.lek and @patrickkuny , I guess you’ll just have to be okay putting up with me for one more month 😊

taking this #internationalwomensday to say a huge thank you to my dear friend and my first mentor in dental school ❤️ it’s incredible how someone can see the best in you and never let you doubt yourself. I truly believe I wouldn’t have accomplished half the stuff I did in dental school without her cheering me on. she even took time from her day to assist with my first resto so I wouldn’t be as nervous! so thank you @olgatronics for being my big sib both in and out of dental school 💃🏻💃🏻 and thank you to all the other amazing women in my life! take some time to celebrate yourself today!
