@nickstevensonart and @lauraclayart are the two featured artists at @affordableartfairtexas Houston this year. On Sunday we’re sitting down together to talk about the part of the work most people never see.

Beyond the Canvas: The Artist Behind the Work. We’ll cover where a piece begins, how much of it is planned and how much surprises us, and what happens when a painting finally finds the person meant to keep it. This conversation is for anyone who has stood in front of a work they loved and wasn’t sure how to ask about it.

Linen and petal. Jute and stem.

Laura Clay and Le Sue build their work from materials that seem unlikely to agree. Both women trace their first materials to a grandmother, and hold lineage as an anchor to their process.

@lauraclayart’s abstract paintings set raw, heavy fibers against handmade paints and pigments sourced around the world.

@studiolesue, the Austin floral studio founded by Avery Aoueille, sets ceramics against metals and fragile blooms against sculptural stems. Each studio’s work embraces the tension of materiality and speaks to the art of contrast.

The duo are teaming up to showcase an arrangement alongside Laura’s works at @affordableartfairtexas Houston. If you’re attending the show, stop by to see the work in person. by @lauraclayart

I am excited to share that curator Noémi Szyller is joining me at the @affordableartfairboston this October.

Like myself, @noemiszyller grew up moving between cultures, born in Paris, with early exposure to museums and exhibitions that shaped a lifelong pull toward art and visual storytelling. She holds degrees in Art History and Museum Studies and has worked across museums and galleries in Austin and San Francisco. It was at the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum that she found her way into the Austin art scene, discovering how much she loved connecting artists with the people who need to see their work.

That background is exactly why I wanted her with me and the artists I’ll be showing alongside. She understands how a room should feel, how a piece should be placed, how an audience finds its way to the work. Having her in Boston means the show gets seen the way it was meant to be. by @lauraclayart

@umbreenahmad_art joins @lauraclayart at the @affordableartfairboston this October, and the pairing runs deeper than a shared booth. Both artists work from culture, not around it.

Umbreen, raised in Pakistan and now based in Texas, carries that inheritance into every canvas: oils, texture, and color exploring nature’s chaos and calm. Like Laura, she treats the studio as meditation, a way of holding memory, stillness, and connection in the same frame.

Side by side in Boston, their work speaks the same language through different hands. by @lauraclayart

The chimichanga actually has a disputed origin story but it is most commonly credited to Monica Flin, a woman who accidentally dropped a burrito into a fryer in the 1920s and supposedly shouted “chimichanga” instead of a curse word in front of children.

There is a competing claim from a restaurant in Phoenix. Either way it was born in the United States, not in Mexico. A dish that exists because of the border, invented by Mexican hands on American soil, neither fully one thing nor the other. Exactly like me.

This piece, Chimichanga, is available for presale via the link in my bio. by @lauraclayart

The Tempest is a play set on an island that belongs to Caliban, who was there before Prospero arrived. Prospero claims the island as his own, as does Caliban. Both believe they are right, and neither is entirely wrong. I read this play thinking about belonging, about how two people can look at the same place and see entirely different histories in it. I have felt that my whole love moving between Mexico and the US, never fully belonging to either while fully belonging to both.

The Tempest is now available for presale. by @lauraclayart

Ophelia is fascinating not because of what Hamlet or her father did to her but because she is one of literature’s most vivid examples of someone whose identity completely unravels when the structures holding it together collapse. She was a daughter, a lover, an obedient woman, and when those roles fell apart she had nothing left underneath them that was entirely her own. A story about identity and how much of it we build from the outside in rather than the inside out.

This painting is what that unraveling looks like from the inside. Color moving through darkness, forms that almost resolve and then don’t. Forms moving through dark water, partially submerged, and partially visible. Beautiful and unsettled at the same time.
