To Stephen Miller, Marco Rubio, Heritage, Canary Mission, Betar and others he says “See you in court”. I can’t wait. Separating labor from belonging, and work from citizenship has a long, brutal history in the USA. The Trump administration is doubling down on the practice - deporting the people while exploiting the labor and suppressing the history. The goal? A vulnerable, landless, vote-less population that the rich can exploit to produce their food. Will it work? No. Humans can’t, actually, eat stock portfolios and dollar bills. We have the option to make a better future now, for the sake of our humanity, our soil, and our souls. The Jubilee Justice Black Farmers’ Rice Project is one example of how we might turn things around. If we have desire. If we have the time. Link to my substack is in my bio. Subscribe! Anna Deavere Smith’s new play premiered at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia last night. She called it a workshop. Hah! It is a deeply researched work of searing truth-telling about this country’s continuing crime of white racist violence and hate. The What Now? festival at the Wilma describes itself as an invitation, in this dangerous 250th year, to grapple with the totality of US history; to an encounter, not an escape. Basil Biggs is exactly that. Just this weekend. Catch it if you can. Joyful and jarring in exactly the way we are in this tense, tender moment. by @lauraflanders

Memorial Days, at the very least, should give us pause before we manufacture more dead to memorialize. And how about we remember all of it? Not just the uniformed and honored dead, but the living who spent themselves trying to prevent more killing and dying; the wars fought, and the wars we were warned against? This weekend offers a clarifying convergence. The Lucas Plan turns 50. The British General Strike of 1926 turns 100. And yesterday — May Day, 2025 — I watched Zohran Mamdani address the May Day crowd. The first sitting mayor of New York to do so since Fiorello LaGuardia. I wrote about history this week, and why I keep going back to it: Free. link in bio. by @lauraflanders

Just now, in Washington Square Park. Our mayor, chanting “Union strong” in front of signage reading: No War. No ICE. No Billionaires. I never thought I’d see the day. (Embarrassingly my phone was out of juice. Lucky for us, there’s NYC-DSA) @nycdsa @nycmayor #mayday by @lauraflanders
