dilithium, chapter 2: doppelgänger, curated by Jen Kratochvil @jen_kratochvil is prolonged until 31.10 at EXILE gallery, Vienna
With
Hynek Alt, Nikola Balberčáková, Květoslava Fulierová & Petra Feriancová, Laura Gozlan, Martins Kohout, Astrid Proll, Anna Rusínová, Sráč Sam, Miriam Stoney

wouldn’t you say, that since the end of the lockdowns – or rather after we decided to recategorize covid from a global threat to a common nuisance – that we slowed down with all the mental health talk within the art world? or was it since the russian tanks and ukrainian drones smashing each other to smithereens lost their novelty and transformed themselves into quotidian background noise? or after most of us went to countless protests following oct 7th and only very little has changed? isn’t that a good question? where is our newly
discovered focus on mental health? where are our healthy, self-aware doppelgängers with newly discovered self-confidence built on analyzed, categorized and almost resolved traumas? oh, or was it after kamala harris took on tim walz and their campaign rechristened itself from brat to normal (in comparison to the “weird” ones on the other side)?
i’d call that “the last straw”…time of normalization officially endorsed not just by fascists and populists all over, but also by everyone’s favorite democratic candidates. normal, my ass. ah, but maybe we don’t talk about mental health that much just because we
already wanted so hard to be in a new season of the global art world tv show, a new season tackling a new exciting topic, just wonder what that might be. becoming normal is for sure on the top of the list. »

Many thanks to all those who came to see my latest video ´Now you’re inside me it doesn’t mean we’ll collegially agree on all topics’, 2024
With the brilliant Giulia Terminio @julieterminio

On view in the show ‘Liminalities’ @galerie_valeria_cetraro, Paris until November 16th.

Thank you Andrew Hodgson @anhoisin for a great text, can’t resist posting an extract :

« And yet, with the video work shown here, also titled Now you’re inside me (2024), down within the storied medieval quarries underneath the early-20th century battlefields along the river Aisne, two players are figured in a high-kitsch moral debate. The young figure of Faust has become lost, and falls through the cut stone corridors from an illegal rave still audible back somewhere else in the underearth. As she clambers through the vaults, she comes across Mum. Mum is a yellow-eyed husk dressed in the suit of a b-movie Frankenstein’s Monster, costuming that references that of 1970s Hammer Horror films.
Mum is eager to peddle the mind-altering substances that Faust has been taking during her time at the rave, and that initiate the hallucinatory scene here. Mum is also eager to peddle her own green-glowing soul, that eventually brings this episode to climax »

The works were produced with the support of @semislieudefabrication @fracpicardie Paquita Milville @les_limbes @akimpasquet @les_ateliers_wonder @holesovickasachta @basic_knife_safety @mmma_off @anhoisin @sinirinnekanto @simonpoulain @factformfiction

Laura Gozlan’s beautifully shot art films, with their sculptural sets, darkly surreal scenarios and mesmerising acting, are looking fantastic projected into HARI’s textured post-industrial space!

Experience this unique installation of Laura’s films, which includes the first 4 films in the series, and the fifth as work-in-progress, and is the first time they have been shown together.

Bringing us privileged insights into the mind behind this stylishly constructed bizarre narrative, and the character she portrays enmeshed in taboo behaviours of dystopian situations, we will be joined throughout the evening by both artist Laura and the writer / curator co-producing this series of European interventions in HARI.
Via online video call from Paris, Andrew will lead an informal interview and Q&A with Laura – and they will be available to socialise with us before, during the interval, and following the group Q&A.

The free event starts at 6pm, with films starting at 6.30pm.
Hot and cold drinks available, or you are welcome to bring your own. The space may be cold, but our spirits will be warm!

FREE SHORT FILM EVENT

Laura Gozlan b.1979 is a visual artist based in Paris. She studied scenography at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki and EnsAD in Paris, before joining Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, where she studied with André S. Labarthe and filmmaker Chantal Akerman until 2007. Her work has been exhibited in both French and international institutions, including MoCo in Montpellier, 40mcube in Rennes, and Futura in Prague.

At the intersection of film, installation, and sculpture, her practice explores the liminal zones of desire and haunting. Her work stages abrupt situations of lust and satisfaction in contrasting and intimate environments. Disrupted by dark interludes, her works disrupt bodily norms and reference the aesthetics of prosthetics and senescence.

Gozlan has developed a series of micro-fictions in which she performs herself. Through disjointed temporalities, she documents the transformations of MuM – a recurring androgynous figure navigating between cosmetics, politics, and altered states of consciousness, exploring their transformative potential.
Youth Enhancement Systems (2019) shows MuM consuming youth treatments as one might swallow poison. In Dead Fingers Talk (2021), onanism becomes a protocol of self-engendering, a solitary cure for regeneration. These operations fail: ageing accelerates, and MuM drifts along the margins. Foulplay (2022–2024) finds her at the bottom – parking lot, sewer. There, she masturbates at the request of an interlocutor, Byron, to influence the outcome of an election. The next day, she retrieves, bare-handed, the waterlogged ballots of electoral fraud. Now You’re Inside Me (2024) extends this descent in a Faustian mode. Exhausted, MuM attempts to pour her soul into the body of a young starlet, seeking to survive in a parasitic form. Finally, in Liminalities (2026), she takes on the guise of an investor attempting to resell rural land still haunted by a ghost. Their relationship falters, and the anticipated transaction dissolves into a hallucinatory drift.

First in a series of interventions by artists from across Europe, selected by Andrew Hodgson and co-curated with HARI. by @lauragozlan
