I just got this seahorse back from the fabricator who re-caste it. Now my series is once again complete. 28 Bronze!

Seahorse. #16
As a sculptor, I am looking for animals that will be recognizable and work as naturally with the human body as possible. I thought the seahorse would be good because unlike a Salmon, which would be vague to identify and really has no head, we all know what a seahorse looks like. The most interesting thing about the seahorse is that the male carries the 1500 eggs that the female deposits into a brood pouch for 9 to 45 days until they reach full maturation (though tiny). For me the symbolism is an appreciation for role reversal.

Here is the final result of my alchemical fire element. Welcome Carmen Cardinal. Some of Fire's attributes are Feelings, Transformation, Desire, Power, Creativity, Passion, and the Aries sign.

My firebird sculpture, aka Cardinal | Carmen, is just about finished. It’s not that far off from this sketch.

Betye Saar has been a inspiration for me in my art practice since the late 1980’s. I had no idea that she had been involved in costuming for the inner-city cultural center as well as jewelry making. As it happens l was involved in theatre art around the same time from high school through college. No wonder her design influences resonated with me - scale, story, fabric, dimension, and magic. Thank you Betye Saar. See her show at Robert’s Projects through 22 of August. by @lauralinnlarson

This is a recent photograph of me working on the red crested cardinal taken by my sister. The red crested cardinal represents the fire element. Here I am experimenting with the use of feathers to create a simulated fire/bird crown. Dean and I are working on a new series that deal with the alchemical elements: earth, air, fire, water, and ether. by @lauralinnlarson

We came to Racine, Wisconsin to visit my sister and to attend my brother-in-law’s memorial service last week. My sister created a beautiful tribute for her husband, Rob Waters. All three of us attended Carthage College. We all worked collaboratively on picture boards that illustrated his life, which was rich and full. I was honored to read the eulogy that my sister wrote. by @lauralinnlarson
