TWO NEW BOOKS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Both illustrated non-fiction for 7-11 year olds - although I think you’ll learn lots from them too. (I did…)

SCARY - illustrated by Hannah Peck - is about animals that seem scary (but are helping us invent medicine / fight cancer / save the planet) and how fear and anxiety actually work.

And KALEIDOSCOPE - illustrated by Nina Chakrabati - looks at the dark / bonkers / brilliant life of colours, and the lengths that humans will go to to create something beautiful.

I’ll talk more about them both. But for now: science, stories, poems, history, anthropology and wonder! Please take a look. by @lauramucha

❤️ What’s love got to do with… public health?

Quite a lot!

In the latest episode of Public Health Disrupted, Xand van Tulleken and Rochelle Burgess explore how love, care and connection shape our health, relationships and communities.

They're joined by award-winning poet and author @lauramucha, and UCL sociologist Dr Rachel Benchekroun.

From attachment theory and friendship to libraries, schools and community spaces, this conversation asks what might be possible if public health took love more seriously.

This week I’m stomping with Laura Mucha, author of ‘Please Find Attached: How Attachment Theory Explains Our Relationships’.

This conversation is so important as our attachment styles affect not only our romantic relationships, but ones with our familles, bosses/colleagues and our own children. Understanding more about attachment theory can help improve our relationships in so many ways.

This poem was commissioned by @somersethouse and @thelandgardeners for the Soil exhibition. As well as researching all things soil, I drew on hundreds of poems written and illustrated by 5-11 year olds from:

Greenside Primary School - Shepherds Bush
Netherbrook Primary School - Dudley
Chandos Primary School - Birmingham
Kings Rise Academy - Birmingham
Billesley Primary School - Birmingham
Highlees Primary School - Peterborough

The poems were gathered by @aneducatedlunch who works with children to deepen their knowledge and understanding of sustainability, food and nature, with the aim of building these into the national curriculum.

The epic visuals are mostly down to @wvanegmond_micro. I met him at the private view of the exhibition, where he talked me through his process and what I was looking at. (The little yellow-black flowering bits are spore capsules of the Pilobolus fungus growing on rabbit poo if I have remembered correctly…??) taken in Somerset House by @lauramucha

Children’s non fiction book of the year!!! 🎉

Last night, Welcome To Our Table - our (@lauramucha @harriet_lynas and my) book about food for kids - was named non fiction book of the year at @theweekjunior children’s book awards. PRESTIGIOUS! And unexpected - we were shortlisted alongside iconic titles like Guinness World Records and Encyclopaedia Britannica. So it’s a super affirming and joyous moment for us all.

Loved what the judges and The Week Jr wrote about it too:
“This beautifully illustrated book wowed our judges, who love the way it explores and celebrates many different topics, cultures and experiences through something we all have in common - a love of food. It is informative, inclusive and full of intriguing details. A BOOK TO BOND OVER.” 👌🏻

Inexplicably don’t have a picture of the 3 of us together - too excited to get a proper photo, I think. So you’re going to have to scroll through.

Tip of the hat to @tegenevanseditor our ace editor @nosycrow.

Now go grab a copy 😜 by @lauramucha

Do you know / have / work with / live near any children? If so, please ask them (and their school) to join me in attempting a Guinness World Records title on National Poetry Day (10am, 3 October).

So far we have 150,000 students from 950 schools across the UK (and beyond). But I think we can go BIGGER. It’s free! Let’s SMASH this!
