The fact that I can talk about Claude Monet during a cataract surgery consult is exactly why I love ophthalmology. 🎨👁️

His experience with cataracts gives us this incredible window into something patients still experience today: cataracts don’t just make the world blurrier—they can quietly change its colors.

And often a person doesn’t realize how much they’ve changed the vision quality until we’ve removed the cataract.

Would you have guessed cataracts could do this? Tell me your cataract stories! by @laurendossmd

A little reintro for Doctors Day!

I’m Lauren

Love bringing confidence and light to my patients by empowering them to feel in control of their eye health and lives.

Precision in the details.
Clarity in the outcome.

Always defining what it means to move through medicine and life with intention and authenticity.

Honored to be on this path.

So be honest, when WAS your last eye exam?

Today, more than 30 million of these tiny lenses are implanted around the world every year. 👁️

Here’s the story of a WWII fighter pilot, a shattered aircraft canopy, and one simple question from a medical student.

Update: thanks to several observant folks familiar with these sites; the video contains a montage of Moorfields and St. Bartholomew’s Hospitals—located very close together and closely intertwined through history and often collaborating sites for ocular research and the ophthalmic educational activities.

I visited for the 60th Annual Ocular Oncology Group (OOG) Conference.

Moorfields Eye Hospital, founded in 1805, after an epidemic of trachoma highlighted the need for specialized eye care, Moorfields has helped shape ophthalmology for more than two centuries.

Standing where generations of pioneers have trained, taught, and advanced our field was something I’ll never forget. 🇬🇧👁️ taken in Moorfields Eye Hospital by @laurendossmd

There’s a very specific reason I ask this before cataract surgery.

Any guesses? Wrong answers absolutely welcome 😂

Could your glasses be increasing your risk of falling? 👀

Here’s something I think deserves more attention when we’re discussing cataract surgery.

Research has linked bifocal and progressive glasses to an increased risk of falls in older adults, with some studies suggesting roughly twice the risk.

When I counsel patients about their lens implant options, I think the conversation should go beyond premium versus insurance-covered lenses.

Reducing dependence on multifocal glasses is another consideration worth discussing!

Of course, multifocal lens implants aren’t right for everyone, and we don’t yet have evidence that they directly reduce fall risk.

But I think it’s an interesting and often overlooked part of the conversation.

Fellow eye surgeons, do you discuss this with your patients? I’m curious! 👇

There’s something I think every patient should know before cataract surgery.

It’s something that can have a surprising impact on your safety as you get older, and it’s often overlooked.

Any guesses? Wrong answers are always absolutely welcome. I love a good laugh. 😂

GLP-1 drugs have been linked to a rare vision loss condition called NAION.

While official guidelines suggest most patients keep taking them, the risks may be higher for off-label users.

Since the main physical risk factor is an eye shape called a “disc at risk,” getting an eye exam and reviewing your personal risk factors can help you make a more informed choice.

Cataract surgery can actually change the way you see COLOR. 🎨👁️

That came up while I was evaluating an art curator for surgery.

One of the most useful questions in a cataract evaluation is simple:

✨ How does the person actually use their eyes?

Occupation, hobbies and visual priorities can completely change the counseling conversation.

This conversation led us to Claude Monet.

His story next. by @laurendossmd
