Hi! I’m Lauren. Most of you know me. I’m a newly minted ophthalmologist just learning about what it’s like to provide eye care out in the real world.
I’m naturally an idealist. I’m passionate about improving access to eye care and promoting health education. I like traveling, making things pretty, cooking (and eating), sweating outdoors, and I love surgery.
Ophthalmology has been my dream since before I can even remember! You could even say it runs in the family, since my dad and brother are in the field. For me the passion started early—I did research on the genetics of macular degeneration when I was in high school and kept up my research through college at UCSB (go Gauchos!). Most of what I remember from college is a whirlwind of learning and growth, since I decided to graduate with my BA after two years, to go to medical school at age 20. I graduated with my MD from UCSF, after spending an extra year as a research scholar at the National
Eye Institute studying the effect of diet on macular degeneration and cataracts (eat that kale!). After that it was internship in Colorado and Ophthalmology Residency at New York Medical College and a fellowship in Cornea and Cataract surgery with Drs. Nicole Fram and Samuel Masket, world experts in complex anterior segment surgery.

I’ve had a hard time deciding whether it’s worth having an IG account talking about my work life, but I’ve definitely been encouraged by my colleagues’ experiences. And I hope someone might be encouraged/inspired by mine! Shoot me a DM if you have eyeball questions or you’re interested in medicine, ophthalmology, or medical missions!
