It’s finally online! And it’s a Vimeo Staff Pick! 🖤

So good (and a bit weird!) to finally be able to share Creepy Pasta Salad with the world! After 3 years making it (and even longer writing), a year of festivals, getting on the 2020 BAFTA shortlist and (equally cool) the @skwiglyanimation podcast, it’s finally online as a Vimeo Staff Pick, and you can watch it at the link in my bio!

It’s nearly here! Less than 3 weeks til @cardiffanimfest 🤯

I’m really proud of this year's programme, which includes some of my all-time animation heroes (going to be hard to play it cool when I meet some of them IRL 🥸)

So proud of the brilliant CAF team @ellysdonovan @lauriewelsman @eryk.ah who pour so much time and energy and care in year-round to make CAF happen.

CAF was my first baby and I love what it’s grown into. Getting it off the ground on almost no money with @daniabram @iamchristopherwright CJ and @telorgwyn (with support from so many people especially @whereintheworldishenow @abaileyeliaba @sallyrgriffith + @joannaquinn) is still the proudest achievement of my career. So many people have come along with us and given so much love to CAF over the years and it wouldn’t be the same without each one of them. Our audiences have all shaped it too, from the first @animationnights in the back room of Porters to the international festival it is today.

Directing CAF alongside running @piclanimation etc and trying to be a reasonably present parent is a massive juggle (and I haven't nailed it). I’ve been quiet on here lately (even more than usual!) because I’ve been working all hours, which I couldn’t do without @garethbrand being super dad and holding things together alongside his own work this time of year (❤️ #forgary). And it absolutely couldn’t happen without everyone else who gives so much to it – especially Festival Producer @ellysdonovan keeping the show on the road full-time year-round, which is a mammoth task✨ So much work goes on behind the scenes to make 4 brilliant days of animation fun happen, and now it’s nearly here again!

ANYWAY – see you there?! Tickets are selling fast, so if you’re thinking of coming, book while you can! We’ve got amazing films, lovely collaborations, more workshops than ever, great special events (Sketch Showdown is back, and I can’t wait for Sound & Vision - Welsh animation with live music!), fun socials, free communal lunches each day, and loads of cool drop-in stuff to do. In the words of @sallygriffith: "CAF is like a great big hug" 💖

Happy New Year 🌙

I've been driving a lot recently, and some of the views from motorways around Wales and the Midlands are so pretty on bright winter mornings – mist hanging on the ground, rolling hills, long shadows, glowy peachy sunlight, daytime moon... the tall skinny trees that grow in rows (poplars?), the trees with flat canopies (cedars?), and gentle giant wind turbines (which my 5 year old calls "winterbines" ❤️). I got inspired to draw so I made this in stolen moments over the last few weeks. It was nice to make something little just for the sake of it.

#onthisday in 2021, the Christmas film we created with @jmcreativetv first aired on @s4c!

Featuring the animals of Wales getting up to antics during the covid lockdowns. As well as this 60' film, we created a whole suite of idents, break bumpers, and promo end boards, which ran throughout December on S4C.

Back from a chilly few days in Eryri. Can’t recommend @thewildswimmingco enough - they took us to amazing places, cooked for us, looked after us so well, and we didn’t have to make any plans or decisions the whole time what a dream. Such a lovely few days with amazing people.

Tidying some old files and found this from 9 years ago! @bcfmradio asked me to make it for a feature on Bristol Music Show in 2016 promoting @oliverwilde__’s new (at the time) and great album Long Hold Star An Infinite Abduction. I loved playing around making the video for Fade, building little fairground rides out of random bits of cardboard and wire with @kadeshadrija_, making little characters with @jamesnutting.animator, shadow puppeteering with @michael_soundrecordist, shooting forest shots with @jillorme, and back projecting onto a shower curtain to make their little world 🎡

We should make another one some time @oliverwilde__?!

RIP to all the plants in the background at the start, I still miss the top one by @laurenormefilms

So great to see @encounterssff back this year. Loved hosting the @wia.uk showcase and panel with Sarah Cox @aardmananimations, @lauratofarides and @frozenladybugo sharing their great films and thoughts. Such a treat to see @michelgondry’s new film, and see Eternal Sunshine on the big screen for the first time with Michel and @charliekaufmanofficial in conversation. Michel Gondry’s work was one of the reasons I got into animation in the first place, and he’s still one of my biggest influences. Thanks Charley @encounterssff for catching a pic of me asking Michel a question in the Q&A and really laughing at the answer ❤️ by @laurenormefilms

Sea Change Festival 2025 🌊💙
Joyous to spend time with @skinnerjen1 @somewhere.org.uk @hollytarquini @sallyrgriffith @mamiefhattaway @planetpp @blobina @stickyvic_78 @rachello.bevanbaker @jacksglockhart @sophiemakesbooks @juliaharriman_creates @kerryfoxacts @amymayyyy @audrey_thomson_photography @thelittleforagerskitchen and loads more wonderful people.
Talked to young kids about their heroines and older kids about career journeys. Hosted a @wia.uk panel about progress and equality in times of change. Drove people around, looked after venues, sorted out tech, got in the sea. Credit as always to @skinnerjen1 for creating the best festival in the world.

She/her | Festival Director at Cardiff Animation Festival

Lauren co-founded Cardiff Animation Festival in 2018, with a focus on inclusion, access, and championing underrepresented voices in animation. Based in Wales since 2009, she has been committed to building community in animation since 2014 when she started Cardiff Animation Nights, monthly socials and independent animation screenings in Cardiff and online.

Lauren produces and directs animation through her micro studio Picl Animation, one of the first animation production companies worldwide to become a certified B Corp. She is also a parent of two young children.

“I believe creating space for real connection and community is key to supporting wellbeing in our industry – so I’m thrilled to be joining this team of great women I’ve long admired to launch WIA UK. I’m proud to represent Wales and hope to see more voices join us from across the country.”
