Celebrating 10 Years of BLOCK! @glassellblock

Congratulations to Lorena Morales, member of LAWAH, who participated in the Glassell School of Art’s BLOCK program in 2019.

This exhibition honors a decade of artistic growth, collaboration, and innovation. Since its founding in 2014, BLOCK has supported more than 50 artists who continue to shape Houston’s vibrant arts community and beyond.

Morales on her work: @lorenamoralesart

“The series Embracing started while living as an expat in Soyo, Angola, a small town located next to the Congo River. These works were inspired by the current and the changing colors of the Congo River. The drawings contemplate the relationship between color, lines, and shapes that appear and disappear according to the changing light or based on the position of the viewer. The experience is dynamic, pointing to the materiality of the media and the immateriality of light and shadow, not unlike what it feels like to question the meaning of ‘home’ and ‘culture’ in an unfolding search for similarity, or what is absent, in new and unfamiliar environments.” by @lawahouston

Physical space preserves experiences that endure in our memory. In this series of paintings, Machado translates her own experiences through harmonious color and playful spatial design. She invites viewers to immerse themselves in the exhibition and experience the sensation of existing within the complex space of painting.

Join us on August 23rd for the FREE art opening!

We thank Glasstire and Susan Chadwick for the insightful article on Arielle Masson’s Chaotic Nodes exhibition. Currently on view at the Glassell School, MFAH the show explores the intersection of art, science, and nature. Masson’s surreal paintings and prints, inspired by mathematics and geometry, reflect on the dangers of technological progress. In works like Ingenious and Upgraded-Blue Wave, she portrays unsettling images of genetically modified creatures and environmental destruction. The title, drawn from a meditation vision, symbolizes moments when reality unravels. Masson’s diverse background and use of ancient techniques add depth to her thought-provoking works. The exhibition runs until October 6.

Introducing the work of Lawah mentor, Arielle Masson, showcased at The Glassell School of Art, MFAH in collaboration with the school’s annual Gala and fundraiser. This exhibit was curated by Patrick Palmer (@houpee), Dean of the school.

Arielle Masson has been working mostly with a single geometric matrix called the Vesica Piscis since 1993. This matrix could be described as the overlapping of two circles, creating an almond shape in between, the mandorla. This diagram acts like a seed, generating multiple figures and patterns in her paintings.

Follow @ariellemasson to delve deeper into her powerful artistry.

Enjoy a night of city views, an open bar, and a DJ set by the legendary DJ Flash Gordon Parks at the Glassell School of Art benefit after-party on May 10! Call 713-639-7581 or email GlassellBenefit@mfah.org to grab a ticket and make a difference while you dance! by @lawahouston
