Environmental art is what I produce. It’s the closest thing to being a biologist, ethnographer, explorer… of life on the planet. My papayas have fed us for decades; they die every winter, and I plant from seed the next ones. I’ve seen them grow and decay, and I finally saw what I needed to see: their trunks are made of layers and layers of the most intricate fiber mesh, graduating from open cell to tight weave. It’s the latest material to make it into my art. I had missed my backyard art lab!

It’s the text every artist wants to get: do you have any art? Oh do I have art…and can I talk about it ad infinitum! We got there- she a thoughtful and powerful collector, and I a good listener. Four of my 10 Dancing Series paintings, 14x17, acrylic pumice rock and bakers twine on archival paper, are packed up and on the way to LA. They are inspired by the Maya glyph that depicts the WAY, or Nahual: the spirit that we are given at birth to accompany us through life and the thirteen layers of heaven. The spirit, which has an animal spirit associated with it, dances freely when its human sleeps. #contemporaryart #latinaartist #abstract #houstonartist #collector

My summer studio, at the shadow of the most regal, gentle giant of a Blue Spruce, serves as the laboratory of ideas for my art. This summer in the High country of Colorado has been one of discovery: actively going into unperturbed forests and creeks, and giving my brain space to question and think. Something is different this summer: the drought has changed everything. I had been seeing new colors in the mountains and the trees, but it wasn’t until I asked and observed my Blue Spruce that I began the discovery of yet more systems of life and survival of the species on the planet. The colors are muted, the warm gray blue of the tree sparse, and the deep greens more yellow ochre and brown. What was I seeing?
I was seeing the species go into full survival mode, filling the tops of the trees with female pine cones galore, to the point of bending the tops of the trees. I was seeing millions of male petit pine cones filling the branches of the lower tree. They are ready to upper propagate the seeds from the female pine cones, and have the polen from the male ones blow far away to pollinate the seeds…survival of the species.
This I can do art about, this is the environmental artist being specific about recording this time on the planet. This is making pigment out of the polen that will insure that the mountains of Colorado renew and stay health. #contemporaryart #arte #environmentalart #colorado #abstract

Today I received a recognition from my home country of El Salvador:“Recognizes the talent, sensitivity, and artistic career of someone who, through their pictorial work, exalts Salvadoran culture, projecting our identity, history, and essence in every creation.” In front of 300 Salvadoreans in Houston who help make Houston a vibrant city, I was able to tell why I do art, and why I co founded ALMAAHH. Did you know that there are 9MM Salvadoreans on the planet, and more than 1/2MM make the Houston region home? I got to meet many important people, including author, Artemis team member, and future astronaut Zaida Hernandez. The recognitions were given by Salvadorean Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Movement Godinez, representing the Salvadorean government. Thank you Consul General Alexander Garcia for the joy and honor of today.

Art is life. This is about a full circle moment: my baby monoprint that I personalized for a beloved young first time expectant mother, hanging in her baby boy’s nursery, is now being studied by her now 5 yr old. I make art as a legacy to humans, and that starts with young ones. If you have a young human in your life, and want to give them meaningful art, I have more monoprints for baby to personalize. You can DM me.

#contemporaryart #arte #houston #handmade #studio As I transition out of my studio, part of the job is to look at the art I’ve produced. It is hanging, as one of three, and memorized at the femininity and strength that this painting on gauze projects. Modular Woman has been added to the cultural landscape of truths, generously, inclusively, and looking towards the future of all young and older women claiming their power within to be keepers of all life on the planet. DM me if you would like to come see it, and the rest of the art I have up!

Pantone Color Institute selected the color CLOUD DANCER for the year 2026, “as a societal desire for tranquility , peace, quiet, reflection. My series of 3 24x36 paintings Into the Light, are an interpretation of the way the Maya thought about the transition to ultimate peace. I don’t know which of the many tones of whites and pale sky blue and gray is Cloud Dancer, but I do know it is there. They are dreamy, cloudy, bright and moody all at once, and ready to find a home to bring it light, peace and tranquility. This Holiday Season, I wish to all my Instagram followers and art lovers, a tranquil time of light, joy and reflection. We are the light, let’s shine bright!

Catrina Monarca environmental art performance, like the real life Monarch butterflies fluttering in our Houston gardens for the last month, encounters new environments. This is an art in art encounter with Monument au Fantome by the French master Jean Dubuffet, at Discovery Green in Downtown Houston. I imagined the butterfly, caught in the cavernous ins and outs of this giant sculpture, being amused by this new landscape, not unlike children who discover art. Thank you team Catrina Monarca for helping me fly into the world with the public art and action call to help Houston be the most prolific monarch Waystation to help this beautiful symbol of migration and resilience survive and thrive.
