Welcome to LAW SCHOOL LATELY. ⚖️

New name, (new!) website, but the same mission – to help students create a life that includes law school rather than one consumed by it.

This has been a ~long~ time in the making. My own law school experience certainly taught me a lot about the law, but far more about being able to work efficiently, what success means to me, and how to embrace every challenge that comes my way. I’ve passed all of this along to other law students over the years and I’m so excited to finally connect with even more.

LSL provides the strategies, support, and advice to reach your full potential – on your own terms. I’ve been in your shoes, made the same mistakes (many, many mistakes), learned the lessons (plenty of those too!), and want to share it all to support both your studies AND your time outside the classroom. Whether you’re hoping to feel more prepared before beginning law school, want strategy support for a full semester, or have specific challenges you’d like to talk through, I’m here for you. 📚

Check out the link in bio and send me an email or DM – I would love to hear from you!

The semester really is closer than it feels📖

I remember August before 1L clearly. I thought I was ready - good grades, solid experience, strong organizational habits - so I spent the month doing ~light~ reading and telling myself I’d hit the ground running. What I didn’t do was build any real plan for how I’d actually learn once classes started. No system for notes, no thought about the volume (which is no joke!), no honest look at what my days would require.

I treated those weeks like a finish line rather than the only window to set myself up. By September, everything felt reactive and it only sped up as the semester went on…

If I could go back, I’d use that time more deliberately. Map out a realistic approach that fit how I process information. Practice the fundamentals before the pressure hit. Treat the semester as something I could design, not just react to.

That’s what this stretch is for - not panic, just the chance to build a plan so the months ahead feel steadier.

It’s been a little quiet on here lately, but there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes. This space started from my passion for helping to make law school easier for students and I’ve been working hard to make it the best resource it can be - sharing real insights into what law school is truly like and coming up with practical ways to support students who are in the thick of it.

I’m so excited to share all of this soon. Stay tuned - something new is coming! by @lawschoollately

We’ve talked about why 1L is important, but what makes this important year so difficult? It’s far more than just the material you’re learning.

Many (if not most) of the skills needed to succeed during 1L are not about being smarter or studying hard. It’s about being strategic, making the most of your time, and having the confidence to stick to your plan and not get distracted by everything going on around you. The great news for incoming students is that all of these skills can be developed.

There’s more information coming soon on how we can be helpful to students through this chapter of their legal journey! In the meantime, here are the top tips for navigating the difficulties of 1L. by @lawschoollately

For everyone starting law school in the fall, congratulations! It’s been a long road to get to this point and this should be an exciting time.

If you’re wondering how to spend your summer or feeling pressure to read those law school prep books, hopefully this helps to relieve some of that. Law school will teach you everything you need to know about the law. Your job right now is to enjoy this time and build good habits that will serve you well down the road. by @lawschoollately

Next up, outlines. These can take many different forms and there’s no right or wrong way to go about it, but there is a right time to start - early! Doing a little bit every week of the semester will make for a far less stressful exam period. by @lawschoollately

The law school waitlist feels like legal purgatory, but don’t lose faith yet. While statistics aren’t in your favor, every year students DO get those last-minute acceptance calls. If you’re playing the waitlist waiting game, read through some thoughts on how to approach it and DM with any questions! by @lawschoollately

Don’t be seduced by the highlighting aesthetic! Rainbow-coded pages may look beautiful and feel like you’re accomplishing a lot of work, but law school isn’t about the prettiest notes. Spend your time on high-value study habits that best prepare you for exams. by @lawschoollately

You know what big law is, but how do you break in? If you’re looking to land those coveted jobs, the easiest route is choosing a law school that sends a high percentage of graduates into big law firms.

The big law track is extremely attractive for many students graduating with six figures of debt, since starting salaries are currently $225,000. However, these jobs can be hard to come by. U.S. News recently released their list of law schools with the most graduates headed to big law. Unsurprisingly, T-14 schools dominate the list, but the inclusion of Howard University is encouraging.

Landing positions at big firms aren’t exclusively reserved for those with degrees from the list above, but the odds become significantly more challenging as you get further out. For example, UT-Austin places only 38% of grads in big law. Emory is right behind with 34%. Florida and Miami place ~25% of graduates in big law and schools like Tulane and Iowa are closer to 20%.

If you’re thinking about where to attend law school and big law is a priority, pay close attention to what percentage of graduates the law school is sending to big law. The same goes for other career paths - the ABA provides employment outcome data for all law schools. Spend less time on school rank and more time considering where graduates are going and if that’s somewhere you’d like to be. by @lawschoollately

Have you ever felt like law school comes with its own language? This is the first of many posts decoding those confusing terms and breaking down exactly what they mean, starting with a “case brief.”

Swipe to the end for an example of what a case brief might look like. Not every case and class will fit perfectly in that format, but it’s a great starting point! by @lawschoollately

For better or worse, 1L grades can be highly consequential for your legal career. The good news is - a large part of success in law school comes down to strategy, which can be planned out well before you step foot on campus in August. by @lawschoollately
