When I recall my journey with dance, it started when I was 18. Back then, I was part of a dance crew where we explored different dance genres - hip hop, house, groove, street jazz, locking, popping, contemporary, etc. We met up at least twice a week. Being able to move and be in community alongside like-minded bodies was amazinggg ✨

This continued for 8 years until I experienced an immense health situation that left me frozen and too weak to move. For 2 years, I wondered if I would ever have the strength to dance again. With so many emotions moving through me, losing dance meant that it was one BIG pathway that my body / mind couldn’t discharge or express itself. Instead, expression came through unbearable symptoms.

One day, I was sitting at my balcony. Clearly depressed, yet faintly holding onto the slightest bit of hope. I started moving my body gently in an un-choreographed manner, letting what I was feeling express itself through my body. As I moved, I experienced a surge of current coursing through me. I was in control of my body, yet this current moved me, sounded through me, and at times contorted my expressions. Dear friends, I genuinely thought I was possessed 🤡. Yet I continued because after each “dance,” I felt lighter and more anchored within myself.

As I journeyed further along my recovery path, delved into nervous system science, somatic, and trained with like-minded bodies, my understanding of what was happening began to grow. Now termed somatic movement/dance, this is such a wonderful gateway for restoration, reconnection with ourselves, and remembering the bigger collective field that’s here for us and within us. It’s also a wonderful gateway for aliveness, joy, and not taking ourselves too seriously. As much as life can be hella freaking tough sometimes, ease and vibrancy are a reality when we allow ourselves to be open to them.

I’m looking to create and co-create more dance containers with people for whom movement is a pathway, or who are simply curious about it. You don’t have to be a “dancer”, just a willingness to move deeply and share your honest expression. Looking forward to dance together soon 💃🏻🕺❤️ by @laylaeris_

Hi, I’m Layla 🌺

I’m a soul that’s passionate about Somatics (which means “the living body”), Deep Rest and the Nervous System. While these are of greater focus of late, I’m actually wildly fascinated by different modalities that guide us back to ourselves. Like…i’m referring to that living pulsating human self that actually feels things, and feels alive, not the bot 🤖😩 (say no to bot, don’t be a bot teehee)

If you wonder why it’s 70% of the things I can’t stop yapping about, here’s a fraction of that why…

The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is a framework that shares about the different states of the Nervous System. It’s also a framework that supports you in understanding your stress responses, and how you can grow your capacity for safety and stability within your nervous system.

When we’re navigating with chronic stress, frameworks are supportive in providing a mental map by which we can anchor our experiences on, and then take necessary steps to soothe ourselves and/or reach out for support.

We have to acknowledge that we live in an epidemic of “stress”, and overworked nervous systems. Many of us also didn’t grow up with language around what stress is, while constantly bombarded with information on the repercussions of stress (physical illnesses, mental health concerns), stress can come off as undesirable and bad.

But what if there was another way to reconsider stress? What it stress has all along been your nervous system’s way of communicating what it needs, for it to be met, rather than suppressed. And by learning to make space to listen, and honor its needs, you grow your capacity to navigate the ups and downs of life with more ease and stability.

In 2 weeks time, we’ll discuss and speak more to this at ✨ Inner Sanctuary, the 3 Day FREE immersion ✨ You can register at the link in bio.

Pendulation refers to the natural rhythmic flow of the nervous system between states of activation and settling. It’s what allows the body to release tension, restore, and return to a state of ease and regulation.

In the video above, we see pendulation unfolding in three ways:

💃🏻1. Movement Quality
Expansion (opening, releasing) and contraction (closing, containing) are innate rhythms of the human body - like our breath or heartbeat. Through somatic movement, we help the body *remember* this natural rhythm which supports nervous system regulation.

🍃 2. Transitions
Here, my body moves vigorously followed by a sudden transition to stillness (almost look a little crazy right there 🤪). What followed after was a deep sigh from within. This snippet beautifully illustrates the nervous system shifting from sympathetic activation into parasympathetic settling. The sigh, associated with the parasympathetic system, signals that the body has completed a wave and is returning to rest.

🌬️3. Mobilising Sensations
I was feeling discomforting sensations arising (notice the tightness and bracing in my body). Instead of overriding them, I stayed with what was present. As my body grew safety through my witnessing, it expressed itself through movement. What looks like “explosion” was actually restoration - the NS releasing through attuned and safe mobilisation.

When we’ve experienced trauma, the nervous system’s ability to pendulate often becomes disrupted. This means that the natural flow between activation and settling becomes uneven or stuck. Some ways by which this manifest is sudden spikes of energy followed by a crash, or inability to calm down after engaging in a stimulating event (even if the event is logically not threatening).

For a dysregulated nervous system, somatic movement provides a safe way to rediscover rhythm. It helps the system *remember* that it can activate and settle without overwhelm. It offers a pathway for energy to move, rather than stay trapped as survival stress. It gives a voice to your internal sensations, so health symptoms no longer become the only way they speak.

Over time, it rebuilds trust in your NS, your body, and yourself. by @laylaeris_
